Actually, he's probably coming on a P-1 visa. Athletes can get either, it depends on how long you plan on staying and for what. (NBA contract vs. Olympics, for example)
You would need - American petitioner (employer, agent, etc.), I-129 and O/P supplement, approval from labor union for that sport (or letter stating that there is no union) and proof of your great athletic abilities. (awards won, membership on a national/professional team, media coverage, sponsorship contracts, ad campaigns featuring you, letters from respected people in your sport)
