      Hi Guest,

I am in the same situation...I have been here on a H1B for 1 years, have had my wages deposited into a bank account....Am from the UK originally and have excellent credit there, but everytime I try to apply for credit here I get the whole "no credit history" responce....The only way I found was to a a secured credit card, where you deposit say $1000 with a bank and that secures you're credit card to a credit line of that amount, then after 18 months if you keep the credit account in good order they remove the "secured portion" and you get the $1000 back with a ridiculously small rate of interest added....

Hope this helps, would be interested to know if anyone know's other options other than the secured cards which also come with ridiculously high fee's to open the account...

            Hey Guest,

Loads do, infact if you search online there are literally hundreds....Household Bank does one through Orchard Bank, if you are looking for one through an actual Bank then Bank of America does one, you can call their customer service number and go from there....I also applied through MBNA as I have an account with them in the UK they said they can take that into consideration as they are one bank....So hopefully might get something positive back there....It's a nightmare as I would like to eventually get a house, and applying for a mortgage with my partner requires very good credit..something which banks here want to make impossible to achieve!

Thats strange. Usually the bank where you have your checking acct should offer you a credit card, especially if you have direct deposit of your paycheck. I had no problems getting credit even as a student on F1, working on OPT or on H1 etc.

I am from the UK. The method I used was to apply for an American Express card back there just before I came to the US. American Express is a global company not a franchise like Visa or Mastercard, so you then ring American Express here in the US and ask to transfer your account here.

If you get refused initially (like I did), ring them up with your reference number and ask to speak to the transfer people as they need to pass it to that department otherwise it gets treated as a normal application. 5 minutes later I was approved for a card! The whole thing took about 3 days.

                    Hope this helps.

                      Hi
I am also british and when we came over here we had the same problem. We then bought something at SEARS ( a lawn mower in fact) and applied for a shop card. They gave us a credit card with low limit of $250. We paid each month and after six months because of good record they increased it to $1000. Once you are in the system you can then get a bank to give you a card and get credit. We have been here 5 years now and each day in the mail they are throwing credit at us. You have just got to get onto that first step.
                      Good luck.
Hope you enjoy the American Dream.

Now H1/L1 visa holders can build credit history by obtaining a peer-to-peer loan.
Check H1bProsperLoans.com for details, it is really cool.

You can also try to get a gasoline card.

                            They're easy to get.

This should help you to establish a credit history.
