h1b multiple extensions.. URGENT (thnks for your help)

Ok, been under a h1b status for 2 years, 3 years renewal asked but INS granted 1 year only. The INS officer i had on the phone told me i could ask for another renewal next year dor as long as i am under the 6 years limit. Have you ever heard about a case like this one ? Can we renew a h1b visa several time ?
I also have a labor certification pending but they still don t have a clue about the law that passed some days ago...
