HELP PLEASE

My H1 & my husbands H4 visa are still under process from last 5 months. However my previous H1 & his H4 are still valid. My husband has to transfer his H4 to J1 visa. Can he do so using his previous H4 papers, instead of waiting for the recently applied papers to arrive? Will we face any kind of trouble? Please HELP!!
