they won't do a backgound check per se, but they will check on the valid immigration status if the spouse is not a USC, more closely so, if there are issues that could reflect negatively on you such as if your spouse is out of status or under removal order and you assumably or reasonably should know about it...

I think if she is F1 status,
            no problem.
And I heard the status of your spous
            is no big issue.
            (even if she/he is undocumented)

But you are evaluated to have good moral character, basically you have to support her finacially and have to be good husband.
            YOu are resiponsible for taking
            care of your spuse.

Magelan: If she is legal and in good standing, no problem at all! Even if she had a criminal background, as long as there are no immigration problems where she could benefit from your naturalization.
GoodSun: you 're mistaken if you think the spouse is not important, naturalizations can be prolonged and will be frequently "tempered" with if there are major problems with the spouse (such as removal issues, illegal or any other issues that BCIS is ticked off).

                Hi Acelaw & Magelan
                My information may be wromg.
                Sorry for that.
I got the info from an adult school
workshop since there were few apploicant
whose wife is undocumented and he asked
                this kind of question.
However, I do not think BCIS conduct
                background check for the application
spouse I think, so that is why
                N400 is not required finger
                print of your spouse.
