F1 Student Visa

I am a Canadian Citizen who is looking at going to school in Florida. Does the process for being approved for an F1 visa take long? Can anyone tell me if it is possible to be employed on a part time basis off campus? Also, Can anyone share with me how the immigration process with an F1 Visa takes place. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks!!
