Americans create illegal immigration problem for two reasons and one purpose.
Reason:
1) they widely offer jobs to undocumented aliens and take benefits of this, without a job offer an alien would go home;
2) they created an immigration law when it is impossible to get legal and an undocumented alien has not way to get documented.

The purpose:
1) very cheap labor force exploitation.
The penalty for hiring an illegal alien is still 1000$.
Provide illegal aliens with a way to get legal and you will have the problem solved!

How ridiculous. Helen, all you need to do is to apply to come to America legally, as hundreds of thousands do each year. If you qualify, there's no hitch. If you don't, you don't, and find a job in your own country.

You must not know about the laws against hiring illegal immigrants. Americans want them enforced and such greedy employers sanctioned. It's not that complicated and American employees now have the right to SUE their employers if they hire illegal aliens ----- the opposite of what you just said!

Most of illegal aliens came here legally and the only work they were offered was unauthorized employment.
The 1000$ penalty for hiring an illegal alien encourages only employers to hire them.
The problem is that American employees benefit from a cheap work of illegal aliens. Employers instead of paying regular rate to illegal alien pay underpay him and such extra saved money pay to their American employees who did not deserve it.

France or Germany do not have so many (10 milions) illegal workers because penalties are usually higher than 20,000$ and this does not pay.
Americans just want that cheap illegal labor to save money at any cost.

Helen, this kind of abuse does still occur, but how about the hundreds or even thousands of American businesses that hire non-citizens in good faith, give them the same pay and benefits as all other employees, and then find out the employee is an illegal?! the issue has two sides. Yes, there are immigrants gettting screwed, but we employers are being fined and penalized because we are lied to by applicants who are evading taxes and committing fraud. I suggest you get the chip off your shoulder, get more informed, and then get active and help us all change things. Like many people on this forum I'm working toward reform - are you?
