Please explain. Someone told it to me on the street and I think he "provoked" me.

      Don't worry,,it means - make great progress, e.g.,

He has come a long way and has learned many things about his new company.

It doesn't mean anything bad. It just means that you've learned a lot. For example, if you came to the US with very bad English and didn't make any friends but now you speak English better and have some friends, then someone will say that you've come a long way.

:-), it may also means that you've entered a hell by now...

Just kidding, America is a great country and it won't take long for you to come a long way towards becoming a true American!

I think it started as a slogan for Virginia Slims cigarettes, back in the 70's. Probably supporting the ERA (Equal Right Amendment) for women. Remember Women's Lib?

The ads would show a woman smoking, with the quote, "you've come a long way baby."

Actually I have seen this 'slogan'in pictures of woman working like dogs in a factory...basically it may well be a cynnical comment made in that case...women who are supposed to be really emancipated in the 70s, actually enslaved to work just like in the 1920s...

What about "mother****er"? Does it mean a person who ****s his mother, thus is deplorable?

Actually No. Its original meaning may be that, but that is "forgotten" - so to speak - and only lurks in the collective unconscious.

                      MOTHER****ER specifically means:

                      Pronunciation: 'm&-[th]&r-"f&-k&r
                      Function: noun
                      Date: 1952
usually obscene : one that is formidable, contemptible, or offensive -- usually used as a generalized term of abuse
                      - moth·er·****·ing /-ki[ng]/ adjective, usually obscene

                            It's the gender-neutral way to refer to someone's boy/girlfriend.

And what a stupid fancy word to denote a lover! Modern English language is truly a stupidity!
