If they detain you, more than likely they have something on you that you yourself might not even aware (or choose to hide).
If you want to stay legally in this country, the registration is a must. If you don't care what your status are, you're free to do what you want. But don't come crying and complaint if INS catch you in the future.

Guest repliedIf you want to protest this program, there are so many other ways, that don't put you in the possibilty of deportation. You can write your congressman (even if not a USC, you know USC's so many still want your 'vote'). Senator Feingold (D-Wisconsin) along with others has written to Ashcroft opposing this policy. Also, there is a letter signed by over 50 foundations, alliances, etc., opposing this legislation (like the ADC, ACLU) you could get active with one of these organizations. By not going to registration, you risk deportation. By law, the INS cannot deport you with out due process. If you register, they may try to get you to sign a form saying you are deportable -- don't sign -- you have a right to state your case before a judge. This happened to my husband when he went to register. They put many papers in front of him, trying to get him to sign them. He wouldn't sign anything with out the presence of a lawyer. Lawyers can be expensive, but there are many who work pro bono, or for a nominal fee. Check out the Justice Department website, surf around until you find 'pro bono' there are lawyers from all over the country that can represent you. (not all may be good, check if they are listed in the State Bar for your area, ask if they have any record of discipline) Talk to a few if you have to until you find someone who seems trustworthy. Contact one to go with you to registration. You are letting the government get away with deporting you (eventually) if you don't go. But, go with representation.
It is true they can detain you for a certain time, for essentially no reason. If you are in status, you shouldn't have too many problems. If you're pending, out of status, etc. But, remember that you have a right to counsel and you don't have to answer anything without your lawyer present. Good luck

Guest repliedGet a copy of the Jan 15 issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where it shows on page F2 a woman, with her husband (both U.S. citizens), crying like you would not believe because they encouraged their 16-year old son (an immigrant but not yet a citizen) to obey the law and register, and who ended up getting detained by the INS. The paper says that "the couple had taken the boy in to register voluntarily for INS screening." That's right, obey the law and get deported without justifiable reason.

Guest repliedDisobeying a government mandate may seem noble and righteous, but it boils down to flagrant disrespect of the law. and as the previous poster points out, noncompliance may lead to serious problems, including deportation, all for a few hours' hassle. Before you give advice like that, you need to think about it harder. Inciting anarchy is no way to improve the situation for immigrants.

Guest repliedNot registering can be basis for deportation and who knows what else INS might decide. Now think again if saving a few hours hassle of registration worth the chance of being deported in the future ?

Guest repliedI have given this a considerable amount of thought and realized there is ABSOLUTELY NO benefit of registring. IF you try to register, they can detain you for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON WHATSOEVER and detain AS LONG AS THEY WANT. Is that what you want for you and your family? Think again!!
By not going, you make a statement to the govt. this is WRONG and racist. This system is bound to fail, it's only COSMETIC to make us in America feel as they are "Protecting" us. How many people who are "Terrorist" you think will go and Register..NONE!! Only simple people just intersted in providing for their families and making a living are beign detained.
DO NOT REGISTER FOR YOU OWN SAKE, FOR YOUR FAMILIES' SAKE!!
May GOD be with us all.
