As per above posting, I think that GC is no more valid, There is only one chance i.e if under the grandfathered catagory the greencard is not bound to the limit of stay period outside the country, otherwise, I know the previous limit was one years and under the new Law its six months.
If a GC holder want to stay more then this limit period out of US then he/she has to take permission from INS, otherwise GC will be cancelled.

It's not what's on the surface of the GC, it's what's in the INS files. Expiration showing or not, time's up.

I'm not sure but since the old green cards don't have any expiration date on 'em how come his in-law's is no Longer valid??

Technically, greencards are good for 10 years and old GC shows no expiration.Your in law is no longer allowed to used his old GC hence cannot come to the US using that old GC as this is classic case of abandonement.

my father in law obtained a green card in 1965, he worked for 8 years in us and then returned home. his green card has no expiration date on it. He would now like to return to us to work. Is it possible with his old card? If not, what would be our next step?
