I once read in a popular Christian magazine the statement that as a Christian, you cannot be cursed. The basis for that claim is that Jesus became a curse for us, that all curses were broken at Calvary.
Gal 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
We have ministered deliverance prayer to thousands of people, saved and washed in the blood of Christ, yet who still had curses operating in their life. How did we know that? During the course of our deliverance ministry, we methodically break curses over people, cancel the assignments of demonic spirits and christian couples counseling often see manifestations as these curses are broken and the spirit leaves. God no longer puts curses on people as He did in the Old Testament however it is still possible for others operating in the demonic realm to do so. People in witchcraft, satanism, santeria, obeah and other religions routinely put curses and demonic assignments out against people and these can be put on Christians as well!
To name just a couple of instances: we ministered to a lady of Italian descent who came to our ministry from out of state because she was in such torment. It turned out that she had a curse of death on her, and a spirit operating in her, because of family (not her own) involvement in the mafia. We also prayed for a man who had a curse operating in life from his mother-in-law, a woman who had not been in his life for more than twenty-five years. In both situations, both were Christians but both were tormented because of these curses.
We believe that curses being broken for us is much like salvation and even our healing. Provision for it has been and completed by Christ on the cross (before the cross, by His stripes, in the case of healing). However, this work must be appropriated by the hearer. Salvation is available for all but not all are saved. Similarly for healing, we must appropriate and declare the completed work of Christ for healing.
There are demonic spirits associated with curses to carry out the curse. The reality is that anyone can curse you but the curse needs an open door/entry point for the spirit to enter you and work in your life (Proverbs 26:2). We break the curses and call out the spirit or spirits associated with that curse.
The misconception that Christians cannot be cursed is one of a long list of mistaken beliefs people hold that can lead to their untimely demise. We should not be fearful of the demonic realm and we have authority over them but we must exercise it. Hosea 4:6 tells us that Gods' people are destroyed for lack of knowledge and this is certainly another one of those areas where ignorance is not bliss!
