Sure can, wife was talking to a bigshot apartment owner and was told his banker that there was a developer who ran into financial trouble and needed to sell an entire sub-division and wanted to know if he'd be interested. He said he would consider it then sent his assistant to check on the developers progress. After his assistant returned he called the banker and site unseen bought the entire sub-division. Bear in mind though he already owned (free and clear) 5000+ apartments and this sub-division was 2400 single family houses. So yes, it can be done as it always comes down to your net worth to the banker.
