Does anybody know or has anybody gone through INS
wanting to deport somebody because they spent more than six month in jail for a gross misdemeanor and they now have the right to take his documents and deport him for life?
    Can anyone help?

It does not usually depend on how much you spent in jail, but what the maximum possible penalty is and what you have been given by court. 1 yaer is a "magic" number here. You do not provide much information on this. So, it is hard to say.

If you were given 6 months jail in addition to Probation then are deportable. Probation in fact is a suspended sentence.
You must check get Certificate of Disposition from the count and check with some good Immigration Lawyer.
        May God solve your problems.
