  • Filing for parent who lives in Trinidad

    Hello,
I'm a US citizen and I would like to file for my mother who lives in Trinidad. Can you please advise me on the forms I should fill out and the steps I need to take. A processing timeline would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    Kebrina

You would start by filing an I-130 petition. After it's approved, it will go to the consulate and she will go through Consular Processing in Trinidad to get an immigrant visa. During this process, more forms and materials will be requested from you and her. It might take about a year from the filing of the I-130 to her getting the immigrant visa.

This is my personal opinion and is not to be construed as legal advice.

Thank You for responding. So I don't need to file an i-864 at the same time?

It will be asked of you at a later stage.

Depending on her age and health condition, there may be a more-than-cursory review of your ability to support her including the availability and affordability of health care in your geographic area to meet her specific needs.

Thank you. She's 56 and in good health condition but thanks for the heads up on that.
