My husband went to the Dallas office this week. he sat there all day. My brother had gone to the same office a week before, and he stood in line at 10 and was out by lunch time. I guess a lot more people decided to register this week. He didn't have a visa stamped on his passport, but he had his H1 B approval notice with him. The INS lady first gave him a hard time for not having a visa on his passport and no white I-94 card, but then my husband pulled out his old passport with with the old H1B visa that had expired and his old I-94 card. She was satisfied with that. My brother was on his fisrt H1B, and he doesn't have a visa stamped in his passport either, but he didn't have any problems. I guess they wanted to know how my husband entered the country (if he entered legally) which they know from the I 94 card. They pulled up his entire history and addresses. She asked to see a letter of employment to prove that he wroked legally at that company. my husband said that people who went in only with paystubs as proof of employment took a lot longer than people who went in with a letter too. For proof of residence, she asked to see utility bills and matched the address and name. She stamped both the white expired I-94card and the nre I-94 form that comes attached with the approval notice. The whole interview and fingerprinting too no longer than 10 minutes. Most of the time was taken up in inputing all the information.

Next to my husband was a man who had entered ona business visa and he'd overstayed apparently. He'd been in the US for seven years and was insisting that he needed one more month to set up his business... but the INS officer didn't buy it, saying if it hadn't happened in seven years, one month wasn't goig to do anything. My husband thinks he was detained because the conversation didn't look like it was going well. If you go to register it would be a good idea to take some sandwiches or something to eat while you wait... it could take a while unless you're lucky and you're done before lunch time.

Are they allow to take food and drinks with you ?
