I applied for visa petition ans adjustment of status in april 1997 based on married to US Citizen.
Visa petition was aproved in feb 1998 and Alien Number was assigned to Me.
I was not issued any receipt number for I-485, The last letter I received regarding I-485 was in 1998. state that my I-485 will be processed on or before May5th 2000. I never heard anything till, No fingerprint No interview.
Yesterday I called 800 number to check the status of my file.
Here it goes:

Hello. I want to check the status of My Adjustment of status application which I filed in april 1997 togather with visa petition. My alien Number Is A # xxxxxxxx.
What is your telephone number?
xxx xxx xxxx.
your address?
xyz ..abc. ssss...
Do you have green card?
No I don't , thats why I applied for I-485 to adjust my status to get a green card.
Then How you get the Alien Number you provided me?
Maa'm this number was issued to me BY INS.
So why you want to get your status adjust when you already have alien number?
Alien number is not the proof that my status is adjusted. it was issued to me when my Visa petition was approved.
what was your Zip code whan you applied I-485?
ZIP CODE.
Do U have receipt?
IF I have receipt I will not call you and bother you. I will check my status online.
Ok . we will send you information within 30 to 60 days.
That's all folks. do you really think what INS is doing when they have these people who dont even know what they are talking about. This was 1-800 375 5283 telephone number enquiry for crying out loud.
