  • Marrying a foreigner while applying for US citizenship

    Hello,

I've been a permanent resident for about 8 years and been living in the US for 5-6 years. I've been in a relationship with a man from another country (also different from mine) and now we're engaged and expecting a baby.

My question is, would marrying him now after having applied for citizenship hurt my chances to get accepted? And if we decided to have the baby in his country, is there a way of putting my application on hold (the interview and all that)?

    Thank you.

    1. Getting married while your Naturalization application is pending should not delay or hurt your citizenship application.
    2. If the interview is scheduled, you can request for rescheduling, but this usually causes extensive delays.
    3. If you have the baby in a foreign country before you are a citizen, you may complicate your child’s ability to get citizenship or permanent residence. You need to talk to an attorney BEFORE YOU TRAVEL to discuss the risk of having your baby outside the US before you become a US citizen, and also the steps you MUST take to ensure that your baby’s status is protected if you decide to have the baby abroad.
