We're currently "celebrating" one year in the US and although there are some things we really like it's not exactly what we expected either. Some of the things we miss surprise us and most expats we talk to also dislike as much as they like.

What we love is all the open space and wilderness. We're seriously considering moving home and are fearful of feeling claustrophobic in the UK or elsewhere in Europe. On the flip side though we miss the animation of pedestrianised town centres in Europe - chatter spilling out onto the street from cafes and pubs...and the ability to post a letter, go to the bank, buy a pair of jeans and have a cappuccino with a friend without having to take the car or sit in a parking lot.

However, the thing that most shocked us was how corporate life suppresses your personality here. We weren't expecting that - especially as Hollywood portrays Americans as rewarding the outspoken person who stands up for what they believe. We've lived in several countries due to work and never felt more pressure to be "yes-men" - not even in the UK which is supposed to be more polite/reserved! Is it just us or does anyone else have the same impression?

I've created a survey to find out the reasons people move to the US
and what they worry about at:

          http://www.opiniondb.com/DoSurveyList.aspx?id=1579b818-...0f-b9a7-40c48d4d0f2f

It'll be interesting to see all the different reasons people come and hopefully of use to those thinking about moving here as well as those thinking of moving back home.
I Looked At the Survey Questions, however Nowhere Is The Question : "Because I Love A USC and Want to spend the rest of my life With Them". Not There???? Nor Is : "Because I Am No Longer Welcome In My Own Country". Or : "Because I Really Respect The Lifestyle and Surroundings In The USA As Opposed To My Own". Endless!!!
