There were 1,122,373 immigrants who were granted legal residence in 2005. Only 34% of newborns in California were non-Hispanic white a few years ago. In 1900, Mexico had a population of only 13 million. Today, its population is 105 million and 18.2 million American citizens in the 2000 Census declared having Mexican ancestry. In Phoenix, Tucson and Denver, the white non-Hispanic population has recently fallen below 50 percent. Demographers say non-Hispanic white people soon will be a minority in 35 of the country's 50 largest cities.

According to the California Department of Water Resources, if more supplies aren't found by 2020, residents will face a shortfall nearly as great as the amount consumed today. Los Angeles is a coastal desert able to support at most 1 million people on its own water; the Los Angeles basin now is the core of a megalopolis that spans 220 miles from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border. The region's population is expected to reach 22 million by 2020. California population continues to grow by more than a half million a year and is expected to reach 48 million in 2030. But water shortages are likely to surface well before then. Water is already a scarce resource in Texas and the increased demand generated by population growth is exacerbating the problem. By 2010, over ten percent of the water needs in urban areas will not be met during times of water shortages. El Paso, San Antonio, and Albuquerque could run out of water in ten to 20 years.

Federal data suggest that as many as 10 percent of the approximately 1,000 Mexicans who emigrate to the United States daily probably are infected with Chagas, said Dr. Louis V. Kirchhoff, a Chagas specialist and a professor at the University of Iowa's medical school. It is curable in its early stages, but kills about a third of the people infected if it is not caught in time. The report found that people from outside the United States accounted for 53.3 percent of all new tuberculosis cases in this country in 2003. That was up from fewer than 30 percent in 1993. In 2003, nearly 26 percent of foreign-born TB patients in the United States were from Mexico. Another third of the foreign-born cases were among those from the Philippines, Vietnam, India and China, the CDC report said. In the past three years, according to a report from the New York Times in February, 2003, leprosy has infected over 7,000 people in the United States. It was brought in by illegal immigrants from India, Brazil, Mexico, and the Caribbean. Leprosy spreads by infected illegal aliens working in fast food, dish washing and hotels.

Bureau figures released Wednesday show the U.S. population grew by 2.8 million between July 1, 2004, and July 1, 2005. Hispanics accounted for 1.3 million of that increase. Census statistics also show that 45% of children under age 5 are from a racial or ethnic minority. 946,142 people were granted lawful permanent resident status during 2004. Top ten sending countries, by country of birth: Mexico - 175,364, India - 70,116, Philippines - 57,827, China, People's Republic - 51,156, Vietnam - 31,514, Dominican Republic - 30,492, El Salvador - 29,795, Cuba - 20,488, Korea - 19,766, Colombia - 18,678, Other countries - 440,946.

Each year, the President of the United States sends a proposal to the Congress for the maximum number of refugees to admitted into the country for the upcoming fiscal year. The actual number of admitted refugees rose in subsequent years with refugee ceiling for 2006 at 70,000. More than 2.6 million refugees have come to the United States since 1975. In recent years, the main refugee sending-regions have been Africa (Somalia, Liberia, Sudan, Ethiopia). The recent resettlement of Somali Bantu from camps in Kenya is the model for the new program "” a model that has not been tested, let alone proven. Though currently limited to no more than 15,000 individuals, the so-called Somali Bantu have direct clan relationships with at least 100,000 others in Somalia. Every refugee flow that the U.S. government has initiated suggests that it is realistic to expect that most of these 100,000 people will eventually make it to the United States one way or another. Another one million Bantus live in Somalia, many of whom can be expected to try to emigrate thanks to expanded ethnic networks, their enhanced chances of success in the United States, and what for some is a newfound ethnic identity conferred upon them by international bureaucrats.

The President has stated that his eventual goal is a program that resettles 90,000 refugees in the United States each year, more than twice the total number of refugees resettled by all other developed countries combined in any year since the federal program began in 1980. For example, Japan has been criticized for its reluctance to accept asylum-seekers. In 2002, 250 asylum-seekers applied to the Japanese government for refugee status, but only 14 of them were approved. Refugees recognized by Japan: 305 persons, from January 1982 to January 2002.

Boyle's Los Angeles, where daily slaughter is a grim reality, is a world away from the glamorous Hollywood hills, Malibu beaches and Sunset Strip. Boyle's Los Angeles is where an estimated 120,000 gang members across five counties battle over turf, pride and drugs. It is a city of violence as a new race war escalates between new Hispanic gangs and older black groups, each trying to ethnically cleanse the other. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who has referred to his city as 'the gang capital of America'.

Traditionally the outside view of LA gangs has been of black youths like the Bloods and the Crips and their countless subsets. It focused on the streets of Compton and South-Central and the culture of gangsta rap. But Hispanic gangs are in the ascendant, spreading across America. They have names such as Mara Salvatrucha, La Mirada Locos and Barrio Van Nuys, and now the 204th Street gang - who made it clear that they will kill innocent girls to force black families off their turf. Hate crimes against black people have surged. With a rapidly growing Hispanic population, LA's gang culture is shifting. It means that being black in the wrong neighbourhood can get you killed. Green's death brought the gang war between 'brown and black' to public awareness. 'All of the signs are there that a racial war is going to explode in this city,' says Khalid Shah, director of Stop the Violence, one of the groups organising the meeting. Memories of the 1992 Rodney King riots, which claimed 53 lives, remain fresh, but Shah believes that worse is ahead. 'It will be 10 times bigger than what happened after King. You are looking at an event which could not only paralyse an entire city but an entire state,' he warns.

The U.S. has experienced a surge in its prison population, quadrupling since 1980. 70% of the incarcerated population are people of color. Latinos are the fastest growing group behind bars. In 1994, one in three black men between the ages of 20-29 were in prison, jail, on probation or on parole. In 1995, 47% of state and federal inmates were black, the largest group behind bars. A survey showed that among the nearly 300,000 prisoners released, 67.5% were rearrested within 3 years, and 51.8% were back in prison. Each year, the United States spends an estimated $60 billion on corrections.

Compared with other countries, the United States has among the highest incarceration rates in the world. More people are behind bars in the United States than any other country. As of 2006, a record 7 million people were behind bars, on probation or on parole. Of the total 2.2 million were incarcerated. China ranks second with 1.5 million. The United States has 5 percent of the world's population and 25 percent of the world's incarcerated population. Inside prison everything is determined by race. Housing, exercise, eating, clothing and access to various jobs and programs depend on skin color. One prison in California had weightlifting equipment labeled "B" for black, "W" for white, and "L" for Latino to avoid fights over. Prison systems are rife with traditional race rivalries. Blacks commit 52% of homicides in the USA, and most of the *** offenses and robberies. It's pretty obvious they're the reason for the huge crime sparks in many major cities. In the United States, almost 1 in 3 Black men will spend time in prison. Blacks are as much more likely than Whites to commit crimes as men are than women.

In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens. A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

Despite the strong family support, the prevalence of single parenting among Hispanics is producing the inevitable slide into the welfare system. "The girls aren't marrying the guys, so they are married to the state," Dr. Sanchez observes. Hispanics now dominate the federal Women, Infants and Children free food program; Hispanic enrollment grew more than 25 percent from 1996 to 2002.

Immigration (legal and illegal) accounts for almost 80% of the U.S. population growth in the last decade. Illegal aliens adjusting status under 245(i) accounted for 32 percent of all "green cards" awarded in 2002. Over 1.3 million new legal immigrants and over 1.5 million ILLEGAL aliens come to the U.S. every year. Since 1986, Congress has passed 7 amnesties for illegal aliens. When the nation tried amnesty in 1986, the idea was to combine it with a crackdown on hiring illegal workers. The amnesty worked for 2.8 million migrants, but the crackdown did not. Nothing is more permanent than temporary worker amnesty.

The net cost of immigration is $70 billion a year. The annual net cost of illegal immigrants is estimated at $20 billion. Immigration costs U.S. born workers $133 billion a year in job losses. Illegal aliens displace 730,000 American workers every year at an annual cost of $4.28 billion. More than half of new workers in the decade of the 1990s were immigrants. Mexicans sent $10.5 billion in remittances to Mexico in 2002. Foreign workers in the United States sent $25 billion to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2002, followed by $16 billion sent to South Asia.

Medical care for illegal aliens, required under the "Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act," which prohibits emergency rooms from turning any patient away in need of emergency care, costs American taxpayers $3.7 billion in Medicare and Medicaid funds. These services are NOT available to American citizens. Immigrants are 50% more likely to get welfare than natives - with a full 75% being more likely to get food stamps, medical benefits and housing assistance. Non-citizens now collect nearly $7 BILLION a year in benefits. Durham (NC) Public Health Department estimates that half of the department's clients speak Spanish. In certain clinics, such as the Obstetrics and Gynecology clinic at Lincoln Community Health Center, the percentages are even higher. Nearly 1/3 of Hispanics receive benefits, compared to less than a tenth of non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics comprised 9 percent of the driving population, but 21 percent of those arrested for impaired-driving nationally were Hispanic.

The number of hit-and-run accidents has risen dramatically in California -- a greater percentage of drivers flee the scenes of fatal crashes here than in any other state in the nation. The figure is more than twice the national average of 3.8 percent - - and a full percentage point higher than the next-highest state, Arizona [which also has a very high number of illegal aliens]. The California Department of Motor Vehicles estimates that there are 1 million unlicensed drivers. Over 25% of the prisoners in federal prisons are illegal aliens.

Twenty cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, Miami, Denver, Seattle and Portland, Maine, have adopted "sanctuary" ordinances banning police from asking people about their immigration status.

Hispanic death rate from HIV disease is 2.5-times that of whites and about one-third the black rate. Tuberculosis infects 8 million people a year worldwide, killing 2 million. Increasingly, the problem is settling in the United States, and in North Carolina. More than half of Wake County's 57 cases last year affected immigrants, primarily people from Vietnam, Africa and Mexico. Across the state, the number of foreign-born patients has almost doubled in five years. We have 16,000 new cases of tuberculosis and 7,000 new cases of leprosy in the U.S. in the past three years. Immigrants account for over 65% of communicable diseases. Tuberculosis, rubella, leprosy, chickenpox, malaria, dengue fever, west nile virus, hepatitis, lice are the result of uncontolled legal and illegal immigration.

The U.S.-Mexico Border Counties Coalition estimates that emergency medical treatment for illegal aliens in the year 2000 was over $200 million for 77 border-area hospitals in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The costs are nearly a billion dollars when other states are factored in.

Japan accepted just 10 people into the country as refugees in 2003, the lowest number since it let in one in 1997, the justice ministry said Friday. Despite denying them refugee status, Japan accepted 16 more people on special humanitarian grounds during the year -- also the lowest figure since 1997, when it accepted three, the ministry said. In contrast, 336 people applied for refugee status in Japan over the year, the highest figure in two years.

Various international organisations, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, have asked Japan to accept more refugees. Japan accepted just 16 refugees in 1999, while the United States took in 85,010 for resettlement, according to the UNHCR. New Zealand, which is smaller than Japan, accepted 1,140 refugees in 1999. Amnesty International Japan said in January that the country is violating international refugee and anti-torture conventions, citing the case of an Iranian applicant who was arrested days after being deported in October. On Wednesday, a Japanese court rejected the asylum request from a *** Iranian who faced the death penalty if his sexual orientation was discovered in his homeland.

Canada's Immigration Minister is pushing for major changes to the country's immigration system, according to government sources. If the changes are accepted, Canada will be bringing in more than 300,000 immigrants a year. All political parties are now cautious about criticising of the high level of immigration, because, as noted by the Globe and Mail, "in the early 1990s, the old Reform Party was branded ˜racist' for suggesting that immigration levels be lowered from 250,000 to 150,000.

According to the Statistics Canada only 44% of landed immigrants aged 15 years and higher were working in 2001 (i.e., a majority of 56% were not working). Immigrant unemployment levels do not reduce to the Canadian average during at least the first 10 years of residing in Canada. Federal and provincial government social programs can experience greater expense without corresponding tax revenue due to the low employment rate of immigrants. The Fraser Institute claims that the immigrants who arrived between 1990 and 2002 cost governments $18.3 billion (per annum (as of 2002) net of taxes raised from those immigrants) relating to universal social services. Immigrant population growth is disproportionally concentrated in or near large cities (particularly Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal). These cities are experiencing the strains that accompany strong population growth causing some residents to express concern about the declining livability of those cities. For example, a Toronto Star article published on 14 July 2006 authored by Daniel Stoffman noted that 43% of immigrants move to the Greater Toronto Area and said "unless Canada cuts immigrant numbers, our major cities will not be able to maintain their social and physical infrastructures". In March 2005, Statistics Canada projected that the visible minority proportion will comprise a majority in both Toronto and Vancouver by 2012.

They have lived through the hell of immigration policies and family separation in America, so they all have an understanding of it. They can relate to the pain. A lot of Americans have no facts and have no idea how the immigration law works in practice so they mostly make decisions based on simplistic views (and often fears) of the issue. For Americans it's very easy to propose anything they wish since it typically never affects them or people they know in any way, it's easy to be cruel or unrealistic in that situation. When you make rules only for others you have no perspective and no real understanding.

Although I should mention that the current immigration laws are not fully based on what Americans want, but on White House politics and lobbying which is an entirely separate and insensible beast. But as the pro-immigrant numbers rise it will help drive the change to better direction.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Afterall many Mexicans has dealt or known someone who has dealt with the pain and suffering of illegal immigration, yet they've done next to nothing, if not make it harder for others to immigrate to Mexico.

Agreed on the reasoning that politic is the main reason of the latest twist of the immigration, instead of doing what best for the country.
