  • New SS card?? can i apply??

    Hi Friends,
Just had a quick question. Since I am a green-card holder now can I get a new social security card? or do I have to wait till I am a USC? Why do I need a new social card? Well the one I have right now says " VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION" Now of course I know that the new card will have the same numbers but at least it won't have that stuff written on it now would it? As always thanks so much for your info and suggestions/opinion friends.

Raju, bring your green card to the SS office and you will get a new card in the mail and it will not say valid for work etc ...

        i did just that.
I went to the SSA office with my GC, old SS card, driver license.

it takes 5 minutes and they gave me a receipt to say i will receive a card without restriction within 2 weeks.

It does not matter a lot since you rarely have to show your SS card to anyone...but it is better to have SSA office take off the restriction on your file.

Or did they do it automatically after we got GC?

Once you're a GC holder and go to your office, you have no restrictions to work and they know that.

I don't think you need a New SSA Card, they will verify your status and will issue you a new card with the same number.
On the same card you have already contributed towards many of the SS benefits.
You will need to find out what will happen to all your social security benefits for which you have already paid for.
To qualifiy for your SS Benefits you need to pay 64 quarters according to SS hand book. I hope that has not been changed so far.

64 quarters? I thought 40 is enough (10yrs)? Not an expert on that matter though.

And from what I can gather, unless you come to the SSA office and apply for a new card yourself, they won't send you one. It's a pretty straightforward process just like everyone has described.

                Hello Ghost, andy, Dastur, marmaduk
First of all thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it. I will go to the SSA office soon and apply for a new card hopefully I will get a new card soon. Now do they keep the old card or do I surrender it? I have been paying towards SS from 1999 and I get earning statements every year I really hope nothing changes if I change my card to new card. As always thanks so much.

You will have the same SSN on the new card, so no need to worry.

They will take the old one. Takes like 2-3 weeks to get a new one with the same number. All your contributions to SS are valid and remains for you.

Take all your immigration papers to SSA along with your old SSN Card. They should collect your old card and shreed that in your presence, and issue you with the New SSN Card with the old number. this how it should work.
Any documents submitted to the Government Agency or issued to any person/company it still belong to that issueing authority/government.
Nothing will change in the benefits or any other matters with SSA. Before you returned that catd make a photo copy and keep for your record.

                      It is 64 quarters

i got the "new" SSN card today...4 days after i went to the office....very fast.

The new card has the same number, now it doesn't show any restriction anymore...only my name and the number....
