Getting a visit from a consular officer is little comfort, as they actually do nothing for you.

However, they do do evacuation, but not advice on emigrating to another country nor representing you in any legal action.

And what do you think happens when in a war zone federale86? The Embassy isn't gonna just sit there and hand out candy to USC's

And it is obvious you never lived abroad. True, embassies and consulates do not act as lawyers or accountants, whether it is US related or foreign related, but the help they do is on the informal side.

However, if you are arrested, a representative from the state department will visit you in jail and to make sure you are being treated well, This is something that lawyers do. embassies and consulates can assist with the basic requirements for living in the foreign country and what you will need if you decide to live there, among other things.

Residency in Mexico and Costa Rica are easy to obtain, especially for retired people, if they have sufficient income.

Asking the American Embassy/Consulate will get you no assistance as their job is not to help Americans with legal issues in foriegn countries.

What would help is contacting the appropriate Embassy/Consulate of those countries in the USA. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>
