status information letter???

can someone please advise. My husband came to the U.S. when he was 17 as an illegal alien but never registered with the selective service because he was not aware he needed to register when he turned 18. Today is the first day I hear about the status information letter and I am running out of time. Is there a letter that he needs to include stating that he did not know he needed to register and if so is there an example of the letter that I should include.
