  • Call from State Department abroad??

My mother is a green card holder and has been living abroad for over a year. She has received a call a few days ago from someone allegedly from "State Department or U.S. Immigration" asking why they abandoned their residence in the U.S. upon which says answered that she had a reentry permit and plans to return.

This sounds very unusual to me. Does the State Department have time to call Permanent Residents abroad???

Please let me know your thoughts or experiences.

    Thanks!
    Anthony

Sounds fishy. First fish is who called? DOS or ICE, USCIS, or CBP?

Very unlikely that any of the the above would call. If they were investigating that fact that she was living overseas, they would just place that info in her file and as a lookout in the computer system, then investigate when they next encountered her.

Can you get more details from you mom?

Let me informed you, that there are many Aliens are living abroad some had a Green Cards some of them hold the Permit-to Reenter the United States...
DOS, Or USCIS do not contact them unless they have received any notification, and the address they have given is abroad. To forwrad Permit To Re-Entr the U.S. to Embassy/Consulate.
Or IRS might be looking for them in regards to Refund or Tax matters.
It looks like some one who knows where about of the applicant and he/she must have called. called....?

I agree with this. They would put the information in a file rather than try to track them down by phone. Fishy is right.

I agree with FSN and ProudUSC,.
In my exoerience in the Consular Section I have not see any letter from any Agency for the Aliens except for the Re-Entry Prmit which we used to received...
They are not USC and the Agency has nothing to do with them....

Thanks so much everyone for the responses so far. I agree. The only other explanation I can think of is a prank call. Somebody tried to be funny. I least I hope so...
