Defeat of the Hagel-Martinez Amendment Allows Constructive Debate to Continue on Illegal Immigration
Washington, DC"”The defeat of an amendment, authored by Senators Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) and Mel Martinez (R-Fl), which would have given most of the nation's 11-12 million illegal immigrants amnesty, sends a positive message that the critical debate surrounding the illegal immigration crisis will not be rushed to completion before the Senate takes an Easter recess.
"Millions of hardworking Americans and their families believe their voice has been stifled in this debate,"noted Dan Stein, president of FAIR. "This proposal would have been a betrayal to the American middle class and an invitation to massive fraud. Every illegal alien will have access to pay stubs, rent receipts and other documents dated earlier than 2001 supplied for a minimal price by the same criminals who now sell counterfeit driver's licenses and immigration documents."
Studies of the 1986 illegal alien amnesty billed as a one-time-only offer estimate that as many as 40 percent of those who gained legal status did so fraudulently.
"No matter how you sugar-coat it, whether you call it a 'pathway to citizenship' or 'earned citizenship', it still amounts to an amnesty, something that is overwhelmingly opposed by the American public,"continued Stein. "The majority of Americans believe we should not reward illegal immigrants with citizenship"”whether they have been here for 2 years or 5 years--it's that simple. We hope that the senators who were trying to push this deceptive legislation through, will listen to their constituents instead of caving to pressure from vocal, cheap labor interests."
The Senate which voted 60 to 38 on Friday against invoking cloture on the immigration debate, deadlocked on drastic measures that would effectively give amnesty to a majority of the 11-12 million illegal immigrants currently in the U.S. "We hope Senators are getting the message from their constituents that we need to need to focus on border security and enforcement only like the Nelson, Coburn, Session Bill, without rushing headfirst to complete legislation under pressure from special interests." A motion for cloture on a substitute bill by Sen. Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn), which would have doubled the already record number of legal immigrants, was also rejected
Stein applauded what he called a "breakthrough"in the Senate to continue debate on this critical issue. "The Senate has been rushed to reach a 'comprehensive' package which focuses on a wholesale amnesty for the 11-12 million illegals, while virtually ignoring the border security and enforcement provisions that need to be the foundation of any initiative."
"The American public has made it clear what they want,"Stein continued. "They want increased border enforcement, they want our immigration laws enforced and they want a legal immigration system that does not undermine their livelihoods and overwhelm their communities. Unfortunately, the Senate and the White House seem to have a very different agenda."
