background check for Green Card

My employer just filed to sponsor me for a GC.
1. How far back does the background/FBI check go - can they check records for what was done as a minor (i.e. before age 18)?
2. Does it apply only to US or to any country?
3. How do they check your history, do they check previous addresses of where you lived abroad etc?

From what i know the FBI security check can vary from 6 months or even more depending on the case! As far how it goes i don't have a clue how it runs and i don't think USCIS have cause they have no control over that!
