Profiling is legal, EXCEPT where it might constitute discrimination (based solely on race, gender, disability, and a couple of others). General appearance and dress are not part of these. In fact, U.S. companies "profile" all the time based on these, and it's perfectly legal.

I was not profiling. Customs pull people in because of visual appearance, body language, and 'gut' feeling. Sometimes there are 'red flags' on the computer. They are well trained. There is something that is causing this person to be 'pulled into the back room'.

As I mentioned, I have travelled all over the world - even into restricted countries - by myself - and never had a a problem. I have always been well-dressed and groomed. I am considered to be very attractive as well. Travelling alone was never a problem for me or any of my friends so I was just wondering if there was something that was 'twigging' customs.

        Aliba,

"private sector" and "customs" are not one and the same.

        Dragonlady,

are you saying that if one doesn't fit the proper image of "well-dressed and groomed" and not "considered to be very attractive as well" then it is OK to pull someone over?

No. I am not saying it is okay for someone to be 'pulled over' for any reason. But people are pulled over for many reasons and in different circumstances. And judgements are most often made on appearance. (When one goes to an interview, the decision to hire or not is made in the first 30 seconds - appearnce is a big consideration). Most people who are clean and well groomed (hair combed, teeth brushed, bathed. smiling..) are considered attractive or pleasant.

"no i definately don't need a "cleanup" - in fact a few of my trips last year were to vegas and i wondered if maybe they thought i was going there to work (dancing, escorting) because i am always travelling alone,(meeting my boyfriend)- but always well dressed, just the typical stylish but sophisticated with trendy luggage, blah blah."

I am just saying that there is a reason this person has problems with customs - and it is not just being a woman alone. There is a real problem with 'working' girls crossing the borders and working in border towns- and it is true in Vegas too.

Who knows - it was just a thought and not worth a whole lot of time analyzing. Common sense would probably save you the time. (Thought you knew me better than that IE)

"Thought you knew me better than that IE"

Definitely didn't mean to be offensive or to misunderstand you.
It was just a question in the context of OP posting.

I know you better and respect you.

            Best Regards,
            IE

lol Antifascist...your condescending sarcasm is kinda funny.

Anyway, yeah, this is why i'm here on this board-to figure out if it is normal for me to have the problems i have experienced. The first 2-3 trips last year were fine. But after that, i have been asked to go to secondary inspection every time. I have even had my bags searched more than once. But I didn't just have problems going to Vegas..flying in to Chicago as well. They have all my info in their system including details on my boyfriend. I can prove i have funds to support myself and therefore am not working, other than that i'm not sure what the problem is?

Next time i come in, i will have my American boyfriend with me. Perhaps that will help..who knows.
