It gives the Judiciary Committee the opportunity to continue its work on a bill while also having a bill ready that can be brought immediatly to the Senate floor under rule 14 if it is necessary to bypass the Committee. Sen. Frist invoked the latter method to bring his own bill straight to the floor.
A bill can't be yanked out of a committee on a whim. It has to go through the process. It must be voted on by the members and reported to the Senate floor.

The Senate is scheduled to start working on an supplemental appropriations bill on the 25th. This is a very important bill that covers funding for the wars in Iraq & Afghanistan and national security. It definitely needs to get done. They also have a lot of other things already on the calendar. Sen. Specter has stated he will resume work on the immigration bill in the Judiciary Committee on the 27th.
It's up to Sen. Frist to decide if and when any immigration bill will be debated on the floor. He controlles the schedule in the Senate. I don't expect the Senate to revisit immigration until the appropriations bill is passed.
