Bank of America plans to offer credit cards to illegal immigrants, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. Bank of America has been testing the program at about 50 Los Angeles branches. Applicants don't need a Social Security number, but do need to have a Bank of America checking account with no recent history of overdraft.

"This is a different card than what's been offered in the past to customers with little credit history," said Bank of America spokeswoman Betsy Weinberger, who said the bank requires a Social Security number "” or proof of U.S. government federal taxpayer status or other documents in compliance with the USA Patriot Act.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) can be issued by the IRS to those working in this country who do not qualify for a Social Security card.

Bank of American permitted checkings account to be opened with an ITIN number and therefore account holders could get a Bank of America credit card. This is a different approach in what I understand the ITIN isn't needed.

I've been listening to the news about this. Glen Beck Hightime Prime said if it goes over well other banks will follow suit. There's a large Hispanic market out there and money is the bottom line of everything.

This was a smart business decision by Bank of America. If someone is "illegal" and they are given "credit", if that person is sent back home then the bank now owns it. If the person is here then they will pay (most of them will pay) along with whatever intrest rate they are given!
