WALL STREET JOURNAL (Editorial): Immigration Consensus

    June 20, 2006; Page A20

Finally a consensus has been reached on immigration. No, not among politicians, who can't agree on a rational immigration reform.

The agreement is among professional economists.

In an open letter to President Bush and Congress last week, more than 500 prominent economists, including five Nobel laureates, proclaim that "immigration has been a net gain for American citizens.
" The letter adds that "while a small percentage of native-born Americans may be harmed by immigration, vastly more Americans benefit from the contributions that immigrants make to the economy, including lower consumer prices.

As with trade in goods and services, gains from immigration outweigh the losses." Alan Greenspan often made this same point about the benefits of immigration while he was Federal Reserve Chairman.

What is striking about this immigration letter is that it is signed by economists from different fields of research, political affiliations and ideologies.

It is possible that no other issue in the economic field, with the exception of the benefits of free trade, inspires such unanimity of professional opinion as immigration does.

Several years ago the Cato Institute surveyed the past presidents of the American Economic Association and the past chairmen of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Eighty percent agreed that immigration has had "a very favorable impact on the nation's economic growth," and 70% said that even illegal immigrant workers "have a positive economic impact.

" These experts agree that on balance immigrants don't displace native workers, depress wages or abuse welfare.

If only these economic facts could break through an immigration debate that is dominated by emotion and political fear.

I always knew that all immigrants help america more then they hurt the country..

Hopefully with those well known economist stating this fact clearly, we can now put to bed this big myth that immigrants take more money out of the system then it puts into it.

Did you check out who put together this letter? The Independent Institute. Known for having its "independent" opinions bought and paid for by companies such as Microsoft.

Nor does the list include many economists anyone has heard of--Paul Krugman, Paul Samuelson, Milton Friedman--or those who are noted for work on the economics of immigration, such as George Borjas. Even the head of the President's Council of Economic Advisors is not on this list.

i guess you missed this quote above..do you even know what it means?...those economist are not only the best of their field, but all have different affiliation.

Alan Greenspan often made this same point about the benefits of immigration while he was Federal Reserve Chairman.

aLAN GREENSPAN SHOULD KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT ECONOMY SINCE HE SHOULD BE CREDITED FOR THE LOW UNEMPLOYMENT RATES AND GOOD ECONOMIC THAT WE ENJOY IN AMERICA.....I WOULD TRUST HIM MORE THEN TANCREDO AND THE OTHER EXTRIMIST.

I know, better than you, Jean, that these guys are not presenting any new research, but their OPINIONS. Furthermore, most of them are not on the caliber of Alan Greenspan, and Alan Greenspan's major concern with immigration has always been the more the better simply because the more people there are, the larger the economy is. Says nothing about the DISTRIBUTION of wealth within the country or the welfare of its citizens. Who is benefiting from this "good economy"? The middle class which makes up most of America has seen their average household income dip for five years running. Did you notice the bit, too, that the signers also acknowledge that "immigration of low-skilled workers may have lowered wages of domestic low-skilled workers," but also note that the resulting wage reductions for high school dropouts is estimated to be from eight percent to as little as zero percent. Gee, that's magnanimous of them. Would YOU want to take an 8 percent cut in YOUR wages? If I'm lucky, I get about a 4 percent increase a year. If you're earning what I am or these guys probably are, it won't hurt nearly as much as it would for a minimum wage worker, either.

Furthermore, Jean, in case you haven't noticed, despite record immigration levels, interest rates have been RISING for the past year or so, job creation is NOT keeping pace with the rate of population growth, and discouraged workers (those out of work more than a year) are not included in unemployment figures. In fact, the Republican candidate for governor in Michigan is emphasizing these forgotten workers in his campaign ads.

Again, our economic have been at its highest point and a very long time..how can you dispute that?? those are facts...

Even alan greenspan suggested that immigrants help this country more then it hurts it..how can you reject the word of the most known economist....our unemployment rate is at 3.9%<--u cant never dispute that..when was it that low? ive read somewhere that it never was so low in about 40 50 years and we had less immigrants back then.

SO REMEMBER, WHENEVER YOU BASH IMMIGRANTS AND THROWS OUT LIES THAT THEY HURT THIS COUNTRY MORE THEN HELP IT, YOU NEED TO REMEMBER THAT OUT UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS LOW IN DECADES

"AND BACK THEN, WE HAD LESS IMMIGRANTS THEN NOW BUT FOR SOME REASON, OUR ECONOMIC IS DOING FINE, EVEN AT A TIME OF WARS AND TREMEDOUS SPENDING ON THE WAR IN IRAQ"

                  No, Aliba, you are lying.
We had this discussion back in November, last year.
At the time Publicus was posting here as well.
He and I proved you totally wrong on almost every issue concerning immigration and economics.
We based our arguments on well known, published reports made for Senate/Congressional Committees/Hearings, for the White House, for the Department of Labor and etc.

But hey, you don't care if you are posting gibberish or making reasonable argument here.

Your target audience is someone with IQ close to your own, so you assume it's enough to repeat "milk is green" 10.000 and no other facts to prove your point are needed.

I do dispute it, Jean. The point is, what does it matter if the economy is "good" if it's only the corporations who are benefiting? And remember, corporations don't vote, people do. And immigrants don't vote, citizens do. Immigrants, especially illegals, are doing well; Americans, not.

Also, my IQ is considerably more than 100, though the fact that I'm wasting time arguing with you does call it into question.

Nor am I "lying". Go check the figures for yourself, if you even know how to do research. They're readily available in major newspapers. In fact, the Washington Post pointed out the widening income disparity in an article just this morning. You might want to check out Paul Craig Roberts writings as well.

I understand people vote and i understand that the american people might feel that there is too much immigrants in this country and may decide to elect only members that would shut the door to all immigrants, but this is not the point.

MY POINT IS, IMMIGRANTS HELPS THIS COUNTRY MORE THEN IT HURTS IT..THOSE ARE FACTS...NOW WHETHER YOU DONT LIKE THEM IS YOUR PROBLEM..WHETHER YOU ARE UNHAPPY THAT AMERICA IDENTITY IS CHANGING IS YOUR PROBLEM, BUT YOU WILL NEVER USE THIS LIE EVER AGAIN.SPECIALLY WHEN ECONOMIST CAN REBUFF YOUR LIES.

Why would I do twice what I did already once?

I will simply pull the thread from November, 2005 where both Publicus and I posted all everyone needed to know to see as a matter of fact that you, Aliba, are misinforming readers here.

You claim that those economist are not known, but yet 5 of them were able to win Noble Laureates....Please, just stop it with your rhetoric and accpet it...again, if the america people wants all immigrants out because they dont like so many hispanic, then fine with me, but dont tell the people that the reason you dont like us is because we hurt your country..i think that we help your country extrmily, i would even say that the great economy that you are enjoying is because of immigrants that are doing the dirty jobs that needs to be done.

Let them keep dreaming by listening to you and Jean, AF1.

It's already coming as such a surprise to many of them that we don't have the amnesty they thought they were going to have by June 1. The prize keeps moving ****her and ****her away, and they'll never understand why, from listening to you. Do you really think that Congress is going to care about 500 economists, when they are facing unhappy voters in their home districts prior to the election? Do you think those voters have heard of any of these economists or care what they think? They care about what their pocketbooks are telling them, and about their own fears for their jobs.

You need to remember that there will always be americans in this country that will do whatever it takes to block any type of anti-immigration legislature..and i mean anything..i will post a article about the subject in a munite
