    Mary, EWI means Entered Without Inspection. For example, somebody that jumped the border without going through a customs and immigration checkpoint.

    Again, if he arrived on a tourist visa, it's not something he needs to worry about.

    He'll be able to work once his EAD is approved (the I-765). It will come quicker than his green card provided he applies at the same time. All the forms I mentioned can be filed concurrently, but unless he applies for residency, there are no grounds for him to gain employment authority.
