      Hi Sunshine and welcome!

What a nice name! I found the following information for you. I hope it helps.

      http://hsmv.state.fl.us/ddl/faqkeys.html#RenDupRep

Renewals, Duplicates or Replacements for Non-United States Citizens

Any immigrant holding a driver license or identification card who needs a renewal, duplicate or replacement driver license or identification card must apply in person at a driver license office at least one time after March 1, 2002, and re-present his/her identification documents required by Florida law.
Any non-immigrant holding a driver license or identification card who needs a renewal, duplicate, or replacement driver license or identification card must apply in person at a driver license office and present identification and legal presence documents.
If you do not have the required documents showing legal presence, your driver license or identification card will be retained and a receipt issued. If you have an unexpired driver license, you will be issued a 30-day temporary permit. When you return with the required documentation, you will be processed for a renewal, duplicate or replacement license and the expiration date will be changed to the expiration date on your INS document.

Thanks for your respond. Yes, the person was there with the USCIS doc. showing the application pending. They renewed it for one year. But it says Temprorary. Did they change the rules or something. As previously had a lic. for 2 years with nothing on it. The reg. licence. Just want to make sure this Temprorary thing won't give any problem while traveling thru airport and all.

            Hi Sunshine,

He should contact someone at the airport to make sure the license is a valid travel document. I think it would be fine since it was issued by the state, but he should check to be on the safe side.

rules change all the time. it's temporary but for one year and it's valid. Since he has application that is still pending is most likely why they are issuing it by one year at a time. Any expiration date? Did they issue the temporary on the spot with the document or did they call their main office to check it out that it's still in the system with USCIS that it is legally pending. Temporary is for 30 days until the paperwork is scrutinized and then receives actual license in mail. rules might change.

Yes, they did verify the doc. with USCIS. Just verified with driver's lic. off. they said its a valid doc. Now the rules have changed since mar, 2007, if you are not citizen or permanent green card holder, thats wht the new lic. will state. So, just want to know if someone has renewed the lic. with pending application I797 Form or Work permit, if their new lic. displays the same TEMPRORARY, TOO. OR may be the women who processed the renewal was trying to be oversmart , as she did a problem first and then she went inside to get it checked.

Caribbeanman, thank you for the info. It clearly seems that the woman who handled his case was just trying to give the problem. According to the rules, if your case is pending then you get 2 yrs lic, that's wht he got last time too. She also questioned howcome the I817 application says voluntary departure under family unity. That means he is departing and all. She didn't had any clue, but she did got verified by her supervisor and he came and said all good after checking i guess from USCIS database. Anyways, do you think it's a good idea to call the Tallahassee # and argue the situation, as temprorary are issued to foreign nationals and all. Or should just let it go for a year until valid.
                          Thanks
