when you read about spousal visa, be aware of the difference among:
    1. Filing I-130 in US, spouse going for K3 visa
    2. Filing I-130 in US, spouse going for CR1/IR1 visa
    3. Filing I-130 directly at foreign post, spouse going for CR1/IR1 visa

The 3rd option - DCF, is usually the best.

Hi standalone (not for too long)

Consider yourself lucky. Embassy in Japan does so-called DCF - direct consular filing. Even more, you don't have to be a resident of Japan to use that, you only have to file petition I-130 in person.
    http://japan.usembassy.gov/e/visa/tvisa-ivpetition.html

Basicly, you file I-130 for your wife (and can come back to the US), after approval, your wife will have to submit some papers (her medical, affidavit of support from you, police reports (including the one from Canada if she lived there more than 6 months)) and will have an interview. If everything is in order, she'll be approved for an immigrant visa CR-1. She'll become a conditional permanent resident of the US the day she'll enter the US. A green card will come in the mail a few weeks later.

You two can prepare by reading about spousal immigrant visa and start collecting the documents that will be needed.

Take also a look at the forms, download them and read instructions.

You can also aways come back to ask about details.
