  • New York City: I-693 required at time of I-485 filing??

I am applying for Adjustment of Status (AOS) based on my marriage to my USC husband. I came here as a college student on an I-20 and have stayed here on a H1-B visa. Can someone tell me if the Medical exam is required at the time of my AOS filing (I-130 & I-485) in New York City? I know District offices have different requirements but this item is not discussed on the USCIS website as being required at the time of filing or later during fingerprinting or interviews. If someone knows from experience or has a number for me to call to confirm, it would be most appreciated! I want to file as soon as possible to get my paper work "in line" so to speak but if this Medical Exam is required I will hold off. Thanks in advance!

The medical exam's results are valid for a year, so you are better off waiting for the interview letter to take your exam , and from what I understood, you can bring those results with you to your interview.

        Hi Kalla, Thanks for answering.

Have you done this type of thing at the New York District Office? I know these district offices are more particular than others. I wish New York City's local policies were spelled out as clearly as San Fransisco District Office's is regarding this document. My residence locks me into filing with NYC's district office so I really want to be sure.

It is also my understanding that the medical exams are only valid for one year. This is part of my confusion. Currently the backlog appears to be 2 year if not more. If is submit the exam now, how is valid by the time my interview comes around? Like wise, if I don't have to bring it until later, so how does one know when their interviews are (in order to make sure I-693 is complete in time and yet not totally outdated??)

While medicals ARE only valid for one year, CIS has issued policy memos extending the validity of medicals (filed with the I-485) every year for the past couple of years. The current extension lasts through 1/1/05 and will, in all likelihood, be extended again. In any case, you do not have to file the medical with your application. You can wait until the interview to turn in the medical your I-485 will not be rejected if the medical is not in the package.
