Report in the NY Times today Feb 12th 2008, states that anyone who has a 1-485 pending for six months, will not have to wait for the FBI name check. As long as their fingerprints come back are verified, then the recipient will receive their green card without having to wait for the FBI name check. If the name check comes back with a problem at a later date then they can revoke the green card. This doesn't apply to those seeking citizenship,they have to wait for the name check.
