    Jack,

How was your trip to the Newark District office? Did your experience match my description or?

Other's are always interested in what to do when visiting their local district office so perhaps you {and others} can confirm or correct my recommendations related to Newark District Office.

Some people get there around 4:30 or 5:00 to get in. I have found that is not really required. If you are there by 6:00 or 6:30 (am of course) you should get in OK. You line up along the closed road between the post office and the courthouse just to the east of the building - they have the 'walkins' come in the east side door. The front door is for appointments only.

One advantage to getting there that time of day is that there is a lot of free parking available. (along street to the east of the INS building).

If you wait until later to arrive (say 7:00 or so) you may get in but you will be there a very long time. If you wait until 7:30 or 8:00 I seriously doubt you will get in at all. Plan to spend at least a half day there (or longer) I will admit that the last time I went, I was out by 10:30 - a record!

Dress warm, wear comfortable shoes and bring a cup of coffee (if desired). Stand (and stand and stand) and relax - getting stressed in that line just simply will not help anything either... Just go with the flow...

Oh yes, bring your passport. They do not let anyone into the builing without proper ID and they really don't like to accept much else for ID other than passports. So make your life simple, bring it.

    Hi, ARQU,
I will head over to Newark office tommorrow (Friday) to check on a pending case (no appointment). How early should I get there in order to get into the building? I've heard that Newark only processes 200 walk ins a day? Thanks.

It is my understanding that it is from the date of the letter. I will conceed that I am not 100% sure of that point; however, the originator of the topic seems to have had an experience that supports that. Either way, it would be prudent to head out to your district office sometime soon to get a new I-551 stamp as even the 1yr from your GC is coming up next week...

I don't think you will have any issues one way or another getting your extension extended....

so, if my NOA is dated 01/21/03 does that mean I am really expired now? If that is the case, what does this mean for us? Now the letter states the alien card is extended one year..which would be 04/05/04. Please clarify for me please.

You will have no problem at Newark. Go there at 6:00 or 6:30 and get in line (except Wed). You need to get through all the screening and up tot he right floor but after that you will be OK...

First week of April MIGHT be a bit early. I actually waited until mine expired but I have heard that you can go up to 14 days before the expiry date ON YOUR NOA. Everyone else out there take note - once you get your 1yr NOA - your status will expire 365 days from the DAT OF THE LETTER. Not the GC as Blank thought...

Take your expired GC (hang ont it and only give it if they ask for it), your NOA and your valid passport to Newark. Stand in line and give it over the counter. Wait 30 minutes or so while they confirm your status. If you have moved - get them to check that the correct address is on file (mine wasn't). They will stamp a new 1 yr I-551 in your passport which now becomes your proof of status and travel document.

I returned from Belgium (to Newark) 2 weeks ago using only my passport with the I-551 stamp and only had a slight delay while they confirmed my status in the office. I was out of there and on my way before the bags had come down for the rest of the plane....

    Hope that helps...

To everyone one who is waiting for I-751. My extension of year has a expiration of May 10th. I just returned from Europe and INS officer at POE told me that expiration is from the date on the letter that is the receipt date and not the date on the gc which I thought what it was. So now I have to go to Newark and get the stamp. My question is I may be going to Europe soon again and would like to ask for when should I go for extension. Will they stamp me if I go first week of April? or should I wait until the last week of April? How are the Newark INS with stamping?
