Some Alabama educators fear the state's new law cracking down on illegal immigration could jeopardize millions of dollars in federal funding for public schools.
At issue is one provision in the law requiring schools to report the number of undocumented students they enroll.

A law signed by California's governor Monday specifies that undocumented immigrant students in the state can be eligible for cheaper in-state tuition rates.
The DREAM Act, which was signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Monday in Los Angeles, is distinct from, if related to, a federal effort of the same name. And what was he doing in 2009 when Dems had filibuster-proof 60 votes in Senate and majority in House? He didn't touch the subject until after his party decisively lost House and almost lost majority in the Senate (which is no longer filibuster-proof). It would be better if he ignored this issue altogether instead of making it obvious that he is only willing to talk about it - as long as it doesn't lead to any action to back up his words.

Blaming Republicans for failure of CIR before 2006 would somewhat be reasonable (but even then they were not so solidly anti-immigrant a block as they became lately).

It is contentious as to whom you should blame for 2007 fiasco (we all remember votes).

But blaming Republicans for failure now, after November 2008 and before losing Byrd and Kenendy (when he had momentum, 2 houses and filibuster-proof Senate), is over-stretching it and is making immigrants believe he is just playing around with their anxieties and hopes.
