I am not of Arab origin, but I'm confident that a legal immigrant of Arab origin - one who loves America - wouldn't encounter discrimination.

I have an accent, and when I talk it's immediately obvious that I'm an immigrant. In my experience, though, this is actually a benefit. Never once have I ever experienced discrimination in America. Americans respect that I'm an assimilated immigrant...that I speak their language and aspire to be an American.

As concerns my Permanent Resident Card, I don't even carry it with me. I have personally spoken with members of the Minute Men organization in Arizona...without the slightest problem.

The Minutemen Project: White Supremacists Gather In Arizona
A group of anti-immigration advocates with ties to white supremacist groups have organized themselves as "Minutemen" to patrol the Arizona border this month looking for illegal immigrants. Many are reportedly armed. Their web site states that they undertake these actions because: "Historians will write about how a lax America let its unique and coveted form of government and society sink into a quagmire of mutual acrimony among the various sub-nations that will comprise the new self-destructing America." The Minutemen Project denies direct ties with white supremacist groups but their language and agenda clearly promote the agenda of racism. The Southern Poverty Law Center reports:

Minuteman organizers say they have carefully screened applicants to weed out members of white supremacist organizations. In late February, they boasted they were even "working with the FBI on background checks," but then backed off that claim when the FBI stated it was false.

"Whatever the Minuteman project's peaceful assurances may be, this is a volatile situation," says Mark Potok, director of the Center's Intelligence Project. "There have been many documented cases of other vigilante patrols violating human rights on our Southern border, and the prospect of armed extremists searching for migrants in the desert is scary. The potential for violence is real."

Numerous white supremacists have claimed in online postings to be registered as Minuteman volunteers. One who posted to the Minuteman Project forum on the major white power website Stormfront wrote: "While this project is not a White racialist event, per se, it's a project that deserves backing from the White Nationalist community in general."

A self-professed member of the white supremacist organization National Alliance posted to the same forum: "While Minuteman is not affiliated with 'Hate Groups' (like the ones you or I belong to), most of the volunteers smell smoke and know there's a fire that needs putting out. This is a good opportunity to reach out to people who are 'half awake' and help them the rest of the way. I'm a missionary for racism and I see fertile recruiting ground!"

Their web site shows photographs of "Minutemen" volunteers holding up Confederate flags. Right-wing radio talk show hosts have trumpeted their cause. CNN's Lou Dobbs gave them considerable air time earlier this week on his program.

Christian Peacemaker Teams has also sent volunteers to the area to help monitor the "Minutemen." "CPT provides organizational support to persons committed to faith-based nonviolent alternatives in situations where lethal conflict is an immediate reality or is supported by public policy," reads their web site.

A right-wing movement calling themselves the Minutemen claims to be bringing hundreds of anti-immigrant activists to do "civilian border patrols." The Minutemen militia, while maintaining their activities will be nonviolent, are expected to be heavily armed and have ties to white supremacist groups. US officials and Border Patrol have publicly described the Minutemen's planned activities as unhelpful.

In April, CPT Arizona will participate in monitoring the activities of the Minuteman Project. "We're prepared to engage in active non-violence and provide emergency medical attention or intervention when vigilantes and migrants are roaming the desert together," explained CPTer Scott Kerr.

Last week residents of Douglas, AZ, awoke to find flyers distributed overnight throughout town by a white supremacist group called the National Alliance. Flyers compared current immigration trends to a non-white "invasion." This, combined with the presence of the anti-immigration Minutemen militia, have people noticeably anxious. Today rumors circulated that unknown people were knocking on doors inquiring about individuals' immigration status.

Throughout April CPT will also help facilitate nonviolence trainings for volunteers collaborating with legal-observer projects monitoring the Minutemen, an initiative set up by the Arizona Civil Liberties Union and the American Friends Service Committee.

Armed white supremacists marching along the American-Mexican border should be a concern for all Christians. We are called to welcome the stranger, to serve the least of these, and to seek justice. These are all biblical mandates that must be taken into account when considering immigration. Vigilantes arming themselves against "sub-nations" dishonor God. This whole story breaks my heart, especially as someone only three generations from the boat that brought my family from Italy. As much as I like your blog, I want to poing out those Confederate flags you mentioned appear to be Southern State flags, I saw only those, not any actual Confederate flags. This is a fine point, I suppose, but then I am an Engineer...

I checked out the current state flags and couldn't find one with the configuration of the one shown in the picture. But you are correct - looking at the photos again - that it is not a plain old Confederate flag. I'm not sure what it is though. Though I'm pretty sure I do know what their intent is in showing it.

I think they're *old* state flags from states that have removed the Confederate flag in recent years.

I led a group from my church (bridgeportucc.org) down to the border during Holy Week with an organization called Borderlinks (borderlinks.org). We talked with migrants who had heard about the Minutemen and they were terrified. There were quotes in the Nogales paper from Minutemen organizers saying they would not hesitate to use "lethal force" (their words) if they felt threatened.We are talking about poor, humble, workers who just need to survive. They are a threat to no one.

The scariest thing to me, is that clearly the word has spread south of the border about this racist effort, and some groups with whom we do not want to mess are saying they are going to come up to the border to protect the migrants. One of these groups is Mano Salva Trucha, which is an organized crime gang made up of former Salvadoran death squad members. Really, for most of the Arizona border there is not much more than barbed wire along that line -- do we really want armed U.S. yahoos squaring off against death-squad members? These Minutemen are really creating a crisis situation.

We asked the Border Patrol agent we spoke with what they thought about the Minutemen, and he said basically "Well, they're a pain in the ***, but what they're doing isn't illegal." I tried to get clarity on that but he avoided the question.

I would also add that I think it is true that the Mexican military effort to curb migrants going north is happening, since we were stopped twice by military, and our group leaders said they had never seen military there before. Mexican migrant aid workers also said they had not seen military presence there before, although they attributed their presence to be more of a drug-trafficking prevention effort than to curb migration.

After all, as long as the U.S. needs the cheap labor (and we will if we want to maintain our cheap-goods/massive profits lifestyle), workers from the South will be "allowed" in...

We will no longer be a viable source of good for the rest of the world. Let's face it, the United States is one of the best countries in the world and it is a land of opportunity. Open your eyes and look around, they are working in many other jobs, desirable jobs. They now even want to subsidize or even pay for their schooling, illegals that is. Many of us can't even put our own kids through school and now we have to put them through school and absorb all there medical costs because the government, hospitals, banks, etc, don't have any way to track them and make them pay, SO WE PAY. We have driver's licenses and social security numbers and we're on just about every database you can imagine.

Something is really wrong when life as an illegal alien starts looking better than being a legal American for many of our poor Americans. If your poor and need medical help, I suggest to walk into the hospital and tell them you don't speak English and you're not from here. They have to take care of you, right? Anyways, this huge inflects of illegals will never be good for us. Our government and their bed pals, corporate America, have a divine plan. It's called poverty for most of us and wealth beyond your imagination for the politicians and the companies taking over every mom and pop business across the country and the world. If you don't wake up the $5 minimum wage will be the standard for most Americans for many, many years to come. NAFTA is designed to spread wealth, supposedly, throughout the NAFTA member's countries. It will do that to some extent, but the truth is it's designed to drive down the wages in this country, to make the greedy even richer. Beyond that, how in the hell can we compete with countries which have little to no environmental or safety standards. We can't compete with that, we must insist they have the same standards or our jobs will continue to exit this country or use import taxes on there products, this might even stimulate manufacturing in this country again.

Beyond the problem of millions of illegals flooding into this country, terrorists and the threat of nuclear attack are more evident now than ever. There are more and more countries around the world that have nuclear weapons or they can easily acquire them.
This reason alone was enough for be to realize the importants of border control. I've never been an activist of any kind until now. Yes I am a Minuteman, it's the only project currently out there that is doing a thing about the problem. Our government has thrown the border towns and there people to the wolves. Sure they pretend to be concern and they go through the motions but remember, corporate America is now running the show. Nearly every politician out there is in the back pocket of multiple special interests. WAKE UP AND TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY.

I am proud to have been a minuteman. We have people breaking our laws. God always wanted us to follow his laws. This nation is based on laws that we all follow in order to live right. Other wise we will have anarchy. We have people from around the world breaking our laws. And God's commandments. (One that comes to mind, "Tho shalt not covet they neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet the neighor's wife, nor his manservent, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor anything that is thy nieghbor's! Exodus 20:17). Well Mexico has proven in the last 25 years to be a bad neighbor. But some of you continue to say poor them. America's citizens are being murdered. Including my 13 year old nephew. But who cares we are only Americans.

I just finished reading a little book called "Doing God's Will" One of the last things it advised was not to rationalize sin. I feel that is what some of you are doing by siding with people who break our laws. Are you really helping them. Or are you keeping them from working on fixing their nations problems. You might say that it is to hard to fix their nations. But I say with God's help anything is possible!

I for one pray on everything. I pray all day. I pray for this nation and it's people. I ask God for guidence in everything I do. I truely he lead me to the Arizona border. And yes I raised my arms out in the desert and prayed to our Lord.

If a lot of the rest of us had time--we would be there too., In my school district---432 different dialects and languages have to be spoken to teach the legal and illegal immigrants who live here. If they are not--they sue and strip the school system of badly needed money. Our native born minority children who need remedial classes do not get them--they sit in large classes while the children of illegals get the money, the small class sizes, the individual attention.

The Luthern Social Services has saddled us with Aids suffering Somalians who came over without any medical check thanks to Condi and now cost our health systems $10,000 a month for their treatment. We pay--not the feds--the state of Florida does. So It now costs us $100 to seek emergency care even with good insurance. An illegal who fell while here working illegally is suing our largest hospital for millions. He will get it even though I cannot figure put what the hospital did wrong except save his sorry life..

We as responsible Americans need to stop these illegals. Our tax dollars are going to pay for these degenerate law breakers to use our public services. They are not entitled to access our public services. Come in this country legally with a visa, or become a citizen, and then you can use our public services. This is a national security issue and if the government doesn't give a **** about it own people, we as responsible Americans need to take back our country.

Now you going to tell me that I am not a God fearing human if I support the decline of illegal people entering a country. Who are you. Over 30% of all the individuals in our prisons are Illegal. Increase in insurance largly due to individuals with without insurance (illegals). Americans tax dollars going to pay for illegals health care and other free benefits. My family can over from another country, yes but here is the difference...they did it legally. It took time and it was hard but they did it. They wanted to be an american not just someone that wanted to get a free ride. Thank God we have some people in our country that care enough about our safety and economic security to do something. Good for them and thank you.

Once again I am confused. How is someone who "takes a job away from an American" also "getting a free ride?" I'm also confused by the statement that Americans wanted the jobs being taken by illegal immigrants. If that's the case, why didn't the Americans get the jobs? No, seriously. The two reasons one person gets a job over another are that a) the first person is more qualified, and/or b) the first person will accept less money for the same work. So if Americans do want the jobs currently being performed by illegals, are you saying the Americans aren't as qualified or that they're asking for too much money? Funny that you'd bring up Blue vs Red state mentality. See, it's the big business Republican types who support cheap labor (see outsourcing, see the erosion of worker's rights, see refusal to raise minimum wage to adjust for inflation). They're also the ones spouting merit-based hiring practices (admittedly, this is usually only when affirmative action comes up --- it's not like Bush got any position in his life on his merits rather than his dad's connections).

While I certainly can't complain about how someone else chooses to spend his free time, I'm a bit perplexed as to why someone who is upset about the loss of American jobs would try to stop this by running around trying to shoot people. (Though it does give a new spin to the cutthroat business world. "You may have a Yale degree but I've got a .22 so I get the promotion.") One would think this was equivalent to buying a pair of boots to stomp on ants but refusing to clean the counters and put the candy dish away. (It also leads to the conclusion that you don't actually want to stop the ants from coming in, you just want more excuses to stomp on them. Perhaps this is an incorrect interpretation.)

Do you really want jobs to go to Americans instead? Go after the businesses who hire illegals. Boycott their products. Demand the enforcement of fair wage laws and of other labor laws. Stop supporting politicians who want to eviscerate workers' rights in the name of competition. Stop shopping at Walmart because they've been a huge factor in the past fifteen years of getting the cheapest labor possible all over the country. If this is what you care about, you personally can make a difference. You can level the playing field. It isn't Christian to shoot poor people, and it's kind of cowardly. Jesus had plenty to say about rich men though. Want to be a real hero? Take on the Goliaths that keep this status quo (to mix a biblical metaphor) and make things better for everyone.

Or you can go around stomping in big boots because it makes you feel powerful. Your free time, your choice.

Oregon – for the record – is a state with a high population of migrant workers (many of whom have entered the country illegally). The state relies on farming as a primary source of income. As chair of the Multnomah County Community Action Commission, I toured some of those farms and the housing workers lived in. The conditions were no better than old slave houses. Businesses – and the Republicans the support – would rather keep the cheap labor coming than to have to provide living wages and benefits for Americans. The situation is complex.

However, calling those who cross American borders looking for work residents of "sub-nations" – a racist code word – is certainly un-Christian. Armed vigilantes patrolling the border looking for people of different skin tones is un-Christian. Working with white supremacists is un-Christian. Most of the responses from the so-called "Minutemen" on this web site have been hateful, racist, and un-Christian.

Two other notes:

First, I just hate sushi.

Second, I'm temporary living in the very red state of Missouri. Though I think of both red states and blue states as simply being part of the same American community.

if you do a search of the internet, the minutemen have not harmed anyone since theyve been patrolling the border, as much as you need that little bit of propaganda to support your beliefs. as a matter of fact, at a minutemen conference recently it was the pro-illegal alien crowd that were the "vigilantes", reportedly throwing cans filled with rocks, wearing masks and waving mexican flags(these protesters demanded the American flag that the minutemen were honoring be relinquished from site!! this is America!). sounds more like an unruly, third world mob than a civil protest rally. but no suprise there, these people have no intention of assimilating properly into America, which is evidenced by the amount of money that is sent back to their home countries each year and the reluctance to adopt our countries language. here in SO CAL, i cant tell you how many times ive seen and heard "brown pride" stickers on cars and "were taking this land back" statements from people out here...the difference? We have more respect for our cultural diversity then these illegal immigrants(ive overheard many illegals refer to blacks as ******s!(can you believe that?), and now at schools and on the streets the tension is rising between blacks and mexicans, because the people crossing over are not concerned with equality or fellowship, theyre after our jobs and services). We have made more progress then any place in the world at making this a country for everyone, that doesnt descriminate between religion or nationality. but Mexico hasnt, in fact, they help their poor cross over instead of resolve the real issues, because this is a country unlike ours. where is their accountability?? i think god would prefer these people focus their hard work on reforming Mexico and solving their own unaddressed and unavoidable problems, rather than running away and making us bear the burden. Americans have fought many wars and overcome incredible political and civil battles to provide the country we have today, why is the same not expected of Mexico?? but to reduce patriotic and fair minded Americans to racists, xenophobes, vigilantes is complete and udder disrespect to everything these CITIZENS and our country stand for.

I don't really have a problem, politically-speaking, with what the so-called Minutemen are doing.

What I do have a problem with is their use of the name "Minutemen". It's going to get hard as hell in a hundred years to figure out which minutemen repelled the Brits and which repelled the Mexicans.

I also think they are a little "alpha male goofy" like the fat guys at the picnic who always want to be the ones that light the barbecue grill while telling you stories about the time they heard about some gook gettin' grilled in 'Nam while they were pushing paperwork in San Antone.

However, if these obvious Bush voters actually believed any of the Bush pap, they'd be in Afghanistan fighting terrorists. Why do they hate America?

If this is your Dribble. We can see why you are so upset with the Minute man project. They are raining on your Pocket book. You have aligned yourself with one Morris Dees. Now that is a virtuous man. Yeah right. The two of you are of the same small minded Pea brained why of thinking.

I am neither part of any White Supremacist group or any anti-immigration group. In fact I work, as a pastor, with inner city minorities in East L.A. and Sepulveda CA for 21 years. I worked with Illegals and legals alike. Even they know that this latest crop of illegals is different.

Unlike the Two of you I had to work in contruction to maintain my lifestyle and support my ministry. My hands are not Baby-but soft. I think that your main concern is that the minute men may take away your source of identity. That would be to bad. Change your focus
