Renewal EAd fee - can i pay by personal check?

I think in some cases CIS demands money orders. I'm filing at a local Washington DC office.

Anyone knows if sending a personal check, as opposed to money order, is ok? personal check would be much easier to track and use as readily available proof of evidence after 90 days is up.

The Washington, DC web site says:

Paying Fees:
Please note that this office does not accept cash. Fees must be paid by certified check or money order. You may also pay with a personal check, presenting photo identification issued by the state or U.S. Government.
