Getting married abroad

My fiance was here in the US illegally (Crossed the border). We have a child together. He just returned home to take care of his parents for a while. I will be traveling down there this summer and we were planning on getting married down there so his family can be there. I have been told that we can get married at the consolate down there and have an interview that day and he would be able to return with me. I don't know if that is possible. Does anyone know how this would work?
