Since this is my thread - I kind of feel responsible for it.

...before we stray too much into the America vs. Europe or the who is superior or the bigger is better ideology. I'd like to steer the conversation back to healthcare. However, the article that I found, although I think it is a very good article, clearly states that the issue might not even be about healthcare anymore. Someone or something is misleading the masses, which in part explains to me also why this thread ended today where it did.

      • True Koller. The freedom to chose crowd have hijacked the debate and have turned it into some kind of crusade against "Big Government" and "socialism" as they see it. Sad. The very people public healthcare would benefit will lose out because of ignorance and arrogance to assume the US has the best healthcare in the world. That's their choice and they'll have to live with the consequences of it. Ever higher costs and more bankruptcies. I don't share davdah's view that the private insurance companies and medical industry will sort out their problems. If competition had worked, we wouldn't be in the this situation now. It hasn't and we are. Nor do I share the view it's all the lawyers fault. Removing lawyers from the equation will make very little difference to the cost. The biggest cost is that of covering the uninsured.

I've already made my decision. If I should get a serious illness or disease like cancer (hopefully not of course), I won't be seeking treatment here in the USA. I'll go back to UK, pay my back taxes and go NHS. I'd rather do that than have the privilege of going bankrupt and/or owe a private healthcare company for the rest of my life. Luckily I do have that option. I feel bad for those Americans that don't.

And the EU is any different? Want to name a country that has played fair in global trade Brit?

When it comes to health care, the two tiered system is not going away. Medicare has its problems, so does private insurance, but demonizing either is not the solution. The problem with the current bills is that none provide preventative care, no cost controls on excessive procedures, no hard, fast solutions to prevent health care fraud, etc. All this bill is, quite frankly, is to give political payback. Every president has done this. And to continue with the deficits the same as GWB is not the answer either Brit. And attempting to paly both sides is not going to work either. you do not have the poker face for it.

Global Drug Discovery: Europe Is Ahead

It is widely believed that the United States has eclipsed Europe in pharmaceutical research productivity. Some leading analysts claim that although fewer drugs have been discovered worldwide over the past decade, most are therapeutically important. Yet a comprehensive data set of all new chemical entities approved between 1982 and 2003 shows that the United States never overtook Europe in research productivity, and that Europe in fact is pulling ahead of U.S. productivity. Other large studies show that most new drugs add few if any clinical benefits over previously discovered drugs.

"Congressional leaders and others concerned about high prices of new patented drugs will be heartened by this analysis, because lower European prices seem to be no deterrent to strong research productivity. A previous analysis using industry-based data showed that pharmaceutical companies recover all costs and make a good profit at European prices. Europeans are not "free riders" on American patients--another myth promoted by industry that assumes that countries are separate R&D/market silos that should each pay for themselves."

                Brit,
there is really not that much comptetion among insurance agencies. Not because of bad insurance companies, but because regulations are outdated, confusing, and counterproductive. In other words, health care industry is regulated out of its arse.

But bringing in a government program, which the government already contrbutes more than 50% of total health care costs is not the answer either.

Regulations need to be improved, an insurance inter and intra state insurance exchange program should be needed, preventative medical care should be rewarded, and healthy living should also be rewarded. But most imporatnt, are the preventative tests. And purchasing a cancer policy would help. The longer you have the policy, the better you are if you have cancer.

There are none. Every country or group of nations will subsidize it's own industries. Not to do so would be political suicide. The bigger and more powerful the industry is, the more leverage it gets through lobbying. I'm just pointing out to people like davdah the US doesn't play fair either. His idea of a level playing field will never exist. It's pie in the sky.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">The problem with the current bills is that none provide preventative care, no cost controls on excessive procedures, no hard, fast solutions to prevent health care fraud </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

I agree. Past governments have done nothing to solve it either. There's just no money to be made in preventative care. You're a walking dollar sign to private medical centers under the current for-profit system. Maybe if some kind of non-profit system were to cover you for preventative care etc...Like a National Wellness Clinic?

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">And purchasing a cancer policy would help. The longer you have the policy, the better you are if you have cancer. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

It's a good idea but if you start to do add-on policies to cover for every eventuality then your premiums will double or triple. Wouldn't it just be cheaper in the long run to pay through general taxation and know you are covered for everything without having to deal with potentially different insurance companies? It's bad enough dealing with one insurance claim!

Here's a few services the average individual in the USA already pays for through taxation:

                                Schools
                                Libraries

                                Police and Fire

Are these mentioned as a right in the Constitution? Is there outrage by the Right that somehow these services are an attempt at takeover by Government under a socialist agenda?
