  • Trying to help a family

Hi! I have a cleaning lady that comes to the house once every 2 weeks and does occasional babysitting. She is from Mexico as is her husband. They are illegal and worked in this country for 6 years to save the money to get her kids here (also illegal but enrolled in CA public schools, receiving MediCal). SHe was apart from her kids for 6 years! I can barely leave my 18 month old for the afternoon...

She is wonderful, hardworking and in general a really great person. My husband and I would like to help her out but I am afraid that because she is here illegally there is not much we can do -- there doesn't seem to be a way to sponsor her (even if we hired her full time) without putting her at risk of deporation -- and her kids too. She is very fearful as you can imagine.

We also would like to get her a ITIN because even though it is only a couple of times a month, we feel weird paying her "under the table".

Finally, it seems that there will be no upward mobility at all in her family if they all remain ilegal. Her eldest daughter, a high school graduate, is a cleaning lady just like her mom.

My husband is the son of immigrants who came here with NOTHING (although his dad was at least on a student visa and immigrated legally) and he has really reaped the benefits of living in this country, and we would just like to make the same opportunity available to these kids. We are sending the 2 youngest to summer camp but a lot of great camps would not take undocumented kids.

HELP! I don't even know where to begin but I would really like to help this family without putting them in danger of deportation!

    Any advice is appreciated.

If they entered without inspection, then there's nothing you can do to get them legal status. To get an ITIN now, the applicant must file a tax return.

As for the teenage daughter, if she's just 18, and hasn't accumulated time toward a ban, it may be possible for her to return to her home country and apply from there to attend college here legally as a foreign student. Depends on how much you're willing and able to help her. Unless the DREAM Act passes (not likely) or an amnesty passes, she and her siblings are out of luck.

Why so bitter? I am trying to help decent people have a better life -- people who are willing to do work for MUCH LESS than any "citizens" will do it. They are trying to access the appropriate resources so that they can do the right thing. You probably can't imagine what they went through to get here. I know I can't.

The only people who aren't immigrants or the "brats" of immigrants in this country are native Americans. And there are far more wasteful ways that tax dollars are being spent then educating the children of immigrants -- don't even get me started on that!

You must have some REALLY SCARY ***per stickers on your car!

          What can you do?

          Nothing.

You can help them save enough money to head back home and live a enjoyable life similar to their other countrymen who seem to be doing quite fine back in mexico and see no need to break our immigration laws.

Life in mexico isn't that bad. Now if they were a family from Congo, and faced starvation and execution back home -- we'd definatley feel sorry for them.

It's interesting--Betsy is the second so-called do gooder in the past week that I've seen who thinks that working for less than an American somehow makes illegal aliens not only acceptable but desirable. Guess it makes them feel all nice and virtuous to pretend they want help someone, when they're really taking advantage of them. Betsy--if this woman were able to earn a decent living, with benefits, and pay taxes, then she wouldn't need to depend on your charity. But, she apparently can only get jobs by undercutting American wages, and probably not paying taxes, while of course, using taxpayer financed services such as education. She probably hasn't the skills to get a decent job even if she were here legally. If you want to help someone out, why don't you help my native-born Hispanic and Native American nephews who just learned the factory where they work is shutting down. They're going to have to compete with illegal aliens such as the ones you favor to support their families.

this board is free and anyone can jump on other person any time which makes actual post hay-wire., starting point to bash on others, etc.
answer to the question is there is no way at this moment to gain legal status withinin US for Alien who entered uninspected.
Some people feel sorry for them who work hard and less paid and some feel that illegals are here to steel their job, and other feels uncomfortable because tax payer money goes to them if they happend to be in emergency etc.
But Law is Law and there is no way that illegal can get legal status within USA, not till any modification to IRRIRA OR new Bill introduced and passed.
Its a discussion, not a legal advise..

Well, lets turn the table around for a sec. For someone that has family in Mexico, thats been waiting patiently all these years for their application to enter US legally to be processed, all the while enduring harsh life there. What kind of reaction do you expect from them when an illegal just waltz past them and ask to be legalized? Why even bother trying to do it the legal way if illegals can get in sooner and with minimal or no repercussions? Only fools will do it the legal way then.

Or how about a single mother trying to support her family by doing minimum wage job, only to found out there's not much available because illegal continues to undercut her since they're willing to work for half the price?

Most of the people that benefit from illegals/illegal immigration are those that employed them, while the rest are stuck footing the bills.

Hmmmm...The comment was not directed at the question but the demeanor of the respondents. IMHO, uncalled for.

How about the untalked about effect of illegals...

the lowering of wages for americans.

Why pay an american $8/hr when you can hire an illegal for $4/hr.

restaurants, factories, security guards, you name it.

The same job that someone legal in Canada or Vermont can get $9/hr -- can't even get $6/hr in a place like Los Angeles or Texas.

Illegals lower wages for others. Supply vs Demand. If people will work for cheap, employers will seek them out and hire them.

                        Who suffers -- americans.

Ask your typical union official what they think of illegal aliens.

While you're considering the "tone" of this board, I hope you were considering the "tone" of Betsy's response about American "brats".

This is the last time I am going to comment on this post because apparently someone12 needs me to draw him a picture-I did not express an opnion on illegal immigration or mexicans. If you knew my opinion you wouldn't be working yourself into a hairball frenzy trying to explain it to me. What should you do about it? (hint: seek out an anger management class)

Buy them tickets back to their country and give lots of gifts, money, clothes for their children. That is called help; not what you are doing by exploiting cheap labor.
