  • It is to one element. I was pointing out the difference how opportunity to take what isn't yours is acted on here versus there. In the areas where the tsunami hit, there are quite a few scenes of devastated landscape that would be easy picking for looters. They aren't doing it. Here, during Katrina for example. That was a huge problem. It's disappointing the media isn't putting much attention on that aspect. You have to acknowledge the pride that runs a little deeper than "where's my free house" I think it admirable and commendable. That's all I'm saying.

    • Republicans started the middle east wars? The middle east has been at odds with each other and the rest of the world long before the Republican party existed. Today, your bud Obama is contemplating air strikes against Libya. So, exactly how is this a Republican phenomenon?

Global warming has already been proven a farce. The so-called science used to make the case has been admitted by its makers as contrived and made to fit the desired results. Remember the leaked e-mails?

Every step forward comes with a risk and reward. As long as the rewards outweigh the risks we continue. Using your logic we should also ban the automobile since more people are killed each year in those than all the nuclear accidents and explosions to date combined.

          • Survey says...Wrong ipers.

            It's the culture, not race.

In japan solidarity and conformity are taught onward from an early age. Attributes such as bending to the needs of the group versus individualism are looked upon positively. Couple that with a taught disciplined approach to life and it's no wonder. The bigger question then becomes, how did that happen.

After WWII, the country was trashed. These characteristics were a necessary undertaking for survival back then. Instead of dissipating as is usually the course after a war, they continued. Japan became a model of efficiency in manufacturing shortly there after which reveals the source of the unnecessary continuation. To be a good company man, you had to sacrifice and do what's best for toyota, honda, or whom ever. The major players adopted the war time conservatism and somehow made it a mainstream requirement for their culture.

It's also revealed in another social tendency in Japan. Something we would call racist but is part and parcel of their society. You may visit, but you can't stay. They cherish being culturally and racially homogeneous and object to diversity. That's also a common divide in war, them and us. It's still 1945 in Japan. That's my opinion.

            • Hudson, your the resident expert. What do you think? Has Japanese society changed much since WWII?

Another misguided notion is that Japanese people are inherently polite and more often than not people wouldn't imagine them committing atrocities. I bet RN's older relatives would strenuously object to that myth.

Invading military forces of a certain country into another country aren't the best ambassadors of upright moral and ethical principles that such nation dearly upholds.

Japanese society has changed, thanks to MacArthur. Women now have voting rights, are productive members of society, more willing to incorporte Western ideals into their culture, society, and politics. and view their emperor as a constituional monarch rather than a living god. However, they are still traditional in that Damyu's still dominate, mostly in the form of business conglomerates, always about saving face, yes does not always means yes, comformists, some Japanese still hold grudges toward Koreans, Americans, Chinese, etc, and still hold on to traditional values that make Japanese society unique.

BTW, their immigration policy is very restrictive because of the lack of land, not because of comformity. It is very difficult to immigrate into Japan, but this is an overcrowded nation.

                  • Speaking of tension, from what I hear those grudges flow both ways. The one thing, loyalty to country is very strong. The old adage of putting your money where your mouth is bears it out. In this case, it could very well be this country's undoing.

In the currency markets it's been the standard practice to use japanese currency as the trading medium due to its low cost of borrowing. Noticing this anomaly and money being what it is, there has to be a reason to voluntarily lose it. It's discovered their government bonds are for the most part held by the citizens. 95% to be exact. They don't pay enough to garner much foreign attention. Who would buy a bond at 1% when you can get triple or more somewhere else with equal safety?

The people were model savers with loyalty to country extended to their personal finance. This fiduciary duty enabled propping up their government's debt expansion at below market rates. That is, until now.

It's changed in that the population is aging and many will become net spenders versus savers cashing in those bonds to fund their retirements. Japan is already deep in the red with her own people at ridiculously low rates. With debt hovering 200% GDP it may be the epicenter of a new economic bust.

Once the population reaches the tipping point where the government can no longer rely on its own to finance further debt they will have no choice but to raise rates in order to attract foreign buyers. It's no different than your mom not being able to give you those interest free loans for that first car or other things when you were younger. Now, you have to go the bank and pay to borrow. In this case, you already owe your mom nearly two years worth of earnings that she needs for retirement and you still need to borrow more to keep going at substantially higher cost.

Their economy has been stagnant pre-dating the collapse and obligations to a rapidly aging population loom very near. There isn't much room to tap tax revenue being near its peak economic/political tolerance.

The death nail is debt. Or more precisely the cost of servicing debt. Those nasty interest payments. At present, although not for long, it can be done with the already stressed tax receipts. Once the rates rise even a single point the payments on debt will rise substantially overwhelming the tax base. It's like those adjustable rate mortgages. Sweet when the rate is a couple points below prime. They rose just a little bit and we got 2008 and lot of hurt.

If Japan were a third rate economy the global impact wouldn't be of concern. It's number three making it a major player. No room for tax hikes and no way to finance more spending at current valuations and rates leaves only one possible solution. Devalue the currency. A polite way of going bankrupt without actually uttering the word. Although your creditors won't be happy getting 50 cents of free market value on the dollar, or yen in this case. The creditors being your own citizens the government may yet again test those limits of loyalty. This time around you'll be asking grandma to freeze and starve.

                    • Can a person be more wrong? I think not. First off, have you read through any of the reports showing where people have returned to their homes, or what's left of them? I guess not.

In any event. They are. Those that have are scavenging for what little remains of their possessions. Many articles are surfacing concerning the orderly emergency efforts and how the people are complying with what's requested. Check them out. Quite impressive actually and something to take note of.

Japan's building standards are such that they will endure quakes of the magnitude given. What did the most damage was the tsunami.

                        • Iperson you should stop. Really, you should. Japan treasures it's singular identity. They are all Japanese, look japanese, and that's how they want it. You're not welcome to stay unless you're 100% japanese. Exclusion is a part of their way of life.

The Japanese culture is more right than left. But it isn't political what motivates their actions anyhow, so it's apples & oranges. being civil has nothing to do with being a repub or dem. You being a good example of what's not. Consistent with the demeaning commentary, never helpful, and on top of it all, ignorant. Who's calling who a neanderthal?

There's simply nothing left to loot in the earthquake areas, all is flattened with the earth, and a large portion is also radioactive so no one dares to venture there.
It's as simple as that. No drama.
Actually Iperson, it is culture. There are food shortages, there are energy shortages, there are domicile shortages, and so forth.

That is not a racist statement Iperson, it is a generalization that is generally true. When you are there, you are called gaungi. Gaungi is a term to refer to outsiders like you and me and Davdah. It can be used in a deragatory manner or used to reflect you are not Japanese. If the Japanese really want to insult you, they will say something, then smile. You will never understand what they said, but you will know that the smile was the insult. This is a society that does not smile in daily life.
