  • N-400 Question about Test & Dual Citizenship

Hi Everyone! Fisrt I just want to say I love this site, it is so informative. I am new here but have lurked for a while and everyone seems so nice and so helpful.

I do have a couple of questions and wondered if anyone might be able to help. I am currently in the process of applying for US Citizenship.
My first question is probably a little lame, but better to be sure than fail the test.

I am married to an American stationed overseas with the US Navy, he is a civilian. I am a resident of NH (that is my home of record in the US). My INS test/Interview would normally be scheduled in the NH office but since I am flying from overseas I have been scheduled at the Boston office. My question is..on the test it asks about "Your local Government"..who is the Governor, Senators..etc I am assuming that I would go with NH Local Government since that is my home of record, however I am thinking maybe they are expecting me to know Massachusetts Local Government since I am being tested in Boston? Any advice? Has anyone run into this before?

Also, I am a UK Citizen am I right in assuming that I can still keep my UK passport, isn't the UK one of the countries that allows Dual Citizenship?

    Thanks so much in advance

NH definitly but to be on the safe side, you should also know Mass. info too. Its easy, go to : http://www.mass.gov/portal/index.jsp...e&sid=massgov2

        and get the desired information.

As for as dual Citizenship is concerened, you should check with USCIS. I know USCIS does not require you to abandon your previous citizenship. However at the time of travel you have to carry two passports (which I think is not a good idea). I would just keep US citizenship and travel on it. I don't think so you can loose UK citizenship by acquiring US citizenship. But make sure with a good immigration attorney. Or you can also ask Immigration Officer at the time of Oath.
When I took oath, the officer did not encourage us for dual citizenship.
        Good luck.

Lipeach, you will have no problem whatsover just as long as you travel on your US passport. The USCIS doesn't encourage dual citizenship, just tolerates it. I have both British and Irish Citizenship but there is no way I am giving that up once I become a US citizen

Paddy, are you saying I'd get in trouble if I have a US passport and enter Europe from the states using my European passport?

I've always thought this and probably won't find out until I travel after I eventually get citizenship. But you know what, I would leave the US using my US passport and enter the UK using my British Passport because the last thing I want to do is queue up to get thru immigration in my home country..but then when I get back to the states, won't immigration question me on why there is no stamp in my passport...........do you see my point that it would be ridiculous to get a visitor visa to enter the UK, the land of my birth.

                Paddy:

If you were only allowed to be a citizen of ONE of those three countries, which one would you pick?

                      1. First thing first: Test; You should ask
                      the USCIS about this information.
                      2. Dual Citizenship: According to the US law,
Once you become a Citizen, you must depart
and enter US on US PASSPORT.

adam you are missing the point.......I would leave and enter the US on an american passport but if I was going to the UK or Ireland I would just hand them my british passport..that was the point I was making

Thanks so much for all of your help. I think I am going to call the INS office (if I can get to speak with a real person..lol about the local government part of the test. My husband also suggested I look at both NH & MA too, but the less I have to remember the better..lol
I have a friend living in the UK she is a US/UK Citizen and she told me that travels on both passports.
Has anyone here tested in Boston? If so, how'd it go?

4Now, I know as much about the Irish equilvalent of the greencard as american citizens know of the green card in this country........practically nothing.....however if you were serious about moving it would take me much to find out from the family I have in Ireland.
