More political smoke and mirrors. The Republicans need to revive this issue and try to somehow make the Democrats look bad. The Dems on the other hand are content on riding the issue into November and hanging H.R. 4437 and the CIR collapse on the Republicans. This is too good for the Democrats to let go. If CIR passes the Republicans will get credit for it and that won't do the Dems any good. Besides, the hardline Republicans would just as soon see it die as well. Especially now that ICE and DHS are doing their job. All they'd need to do is slip in a few of the enforcement provisions into one of the must pass bills and whoalla. Since they already slipped 2 billion into the appropriation bill to beef up the border all they'd need to do is add legislation that would expand the employer verification system and make it mandatory as well as giving ICE and DHS access to the SSN database. That would put a huge dent in the illegal population.

Harry reid seems to suggest he wont stop the passage of the compromise because he angered hispanic,unions and church groups when he blocked the passage...hispanic lobbyist told harry reid to let the bill go throught and this is why he asked bill frist to please bring the bill back up once the senate gets back from the recess...also, harry reid's been under heavy pressure from the president and members from his own party for blocking the bill, so i doubt the democraic party will block this thing...mark my words, there 's a strong bi partisan groups that is pushing for this.

I don't know, seems a bit fishy to me. According to this article, they're going to add a 2 billion dollar enforcement provision to the appropriations bill next week first then move onto the CIR bill. Could be a bait n switch. If the CIR fails then Frist can still say he pushed some enforcement upgrades to the immigration system and look tough on immigration. This will make his base happy.

Why wouldn't they just pass the appropriation bill and then tackle everything on immigration at once? Or why wouldn't they just tackle immigration first then move onto the appropriations bill?

Makes sense if you think about it. Sen. Frist has nothing to lose. There's no way the Democrats are going to vote against adding some enforcement provisions to the spending bill. Everyone agrees that we need better enforcement. The spending bill must be passed because it funds the troops and the Katrina victims. No way the Democrats are going to stop this bill. Either way, Frist can say he pushed something through this year.
