At the age of 18 you're considered a legal adult in the US.The kid wouldn't be child anymore so technically they can make their own decisions.

Your a legal adult in teh U.S. at the age of 18, BUT each state also has different rules about the age of consent when it comes to custody issues and emancipation.

Harrison, your question is two fold.
A person is considered an adult when they turn 18 no matter what state they live in. Basically they are now able to sign a bidding contract. The legal parents are now no long considered responsible for that 'Child's" actions.

On the other hand, if its about custody, then every State has different age requirements. Consult your local family court about age of consent.

          Good luck
