  • SJC on S-SPAN

    Senators:

    1. Senator Specter -
Gets 10+ for the broadest vision, understanding of the polictical situation on the ground as well as real picture of illegal population.
Tries to press for most likely to pass the Senate legislation.

    2. Sen Leahy -
Gets 10 for his understanding and support of similar approach with Sen. SPecter

    3. Sen Kennedy -
    Gets 4-
Has good intentions , but may spoil it for all, because he too hardly presses for his own version, not giving much thought to current polls, overall political reality and etc.

    4. Sen Kyl & Cornyn -
    Both get 8+.
Both have stated legitimate concerns and both are closer to Specter-Leahy mindset than Kennedy.

    5. Sen Feinstein -
    Gets 4-
Has narrow vision , tries hard to push for AG amnesty, nothwitstanding the fact that President does not support amnesty.

    6. Sen Sessions -
    Gets 4-
On the opposite side of Kennedy, similar to Kennedy in his insistence that his vision be upheld above any other.

If SJC fails today to pass Bill through Committee , it will be due to Sens. Kebbedy, Feinstein and Session rather than any other Senator.

      Antifascist1,

I'm pretty satisfied with the bill so far. I think it's fair, but the t***** issue is still what to do with the 11-20 million illegal immigrants already here and how to structure the guest-worker program. How would you tackle the situation?

Along the lines of Specter-Leahy-Cornyn-Kyl vision.

Talking agjobs is fine, but making an amendment that will turn the Bill into something that won't ever pass Senate (not speaking of House), and which President himslef strongly opposes is something else.

Sens. Kennedy and Feinstein are in fact making it harder for Chairman Specter to pass realistic solution.

Makes one wonder if the Dems really don't want anything to pass so they can use it against the Reps on midterm election. Both sides are courting the Hispanic votes, and if Dubya suceeded in pushing the guest worker program through, he'll achieve a big leap in that area.

Sen. Kennedy ruined it for all, with his "best intentions"...
