A 9-year-old boy whose mother died Thursday night after their car fell off a cliff south of Arivaca was rescued by an illegal border crosser who stayed with him through the night.
At about 5 p.m. Thanksgiving evening, a 45-year-old woman from Rimrock, Ariz., and her 9-year-old son were traveling in a green SUV on Forest Service Road 29, about five miles west of milepost 10 on Ruby Road when she lost control, hit an embankment and went down a cliff, said Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada. Ruby Road is northwest of Nogales.
She was pinned inside the vehicle and probably died immediately, he said. The boy got out of the car and was by himself until about 3 a.m. when a man, Jesus Manuel Cordova, 21, of Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Mexico, encountered the boy, Estrada said. Cordova was walking north in an attempt to cross into the country illegally, he said.
Cordova consoled the boy, gave him a jacket, built a bonfire and stayed with him until about 8 a.m., when he gave the boy over to a passerby, who alerted authorities. The boy was flown to a Tucson hospital for precautionary measures, Estrada said.
The boy is now an orphan; his father died two months ago, Estrada said. He and his mother were in the area camping.
"It's very tragic not only for that but because it was Thanksgiving day," Estrada said. As for Cordova, Border Patrol agents apprehended him. His actions probably saved the boy's life, he said.
"These people take a knock from a lot of people and yet, they are willing to sacrifice getting caught to help a kid," Estrada said.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff's deputies are still at the scene collecting information, Estrada said. Release of the names of the woman and her son are pending notification of next of kin, he said.
Rimrock is located in Northern Arizona between Phoenix and Flagstaff off of Interstate 17.
