Tha piece of plastic used to laminate documents is called "mica" in Spanish. Hispanic people (at least Mexicans) started calling the credit-card-size laminated immigration documents "mica" as opposed to stamped authorizations on book-style passports. That's why many people still refer to documents like I-551, BBC (Border Crossing Cards, etc.) as "micas"...
