I've been looking for an answer to this question everywhere, but have had no luck. When can an alien who is in removal proceedings file a defensive asylum application, at the Master Calendar hearing, or before then? If someone knows the answer and can point me toward the source, it would be greatly appreciated.

So, let me make sure that I understand your position correctly: you were living illegally in America for many years...then you were processed for deportation...and then you "suddenly" remembered that you were really a refugee!!! Say, what?
Do you really think that the American people are that stupid????
In any event, any claim of asylum MUST be filed within one year of your arrival in America. I read in today's New York Times that some Mexican illegals are leaving America, hoping to claim asylum in Canada!!! Of course, they have no chance of winning asylum in Canada...but it just proves that Mexicans will do ANYTHING other than actually live in Mexico...yet, they'll happily march in the streets of America waving the Mexican rag and chanting "Viva Mexico" How pathetic.
