I-751: Some people don't send affidavits. Not necessary if enough documentation?

I've been around on different sites about others' experiences with filing I-751 for removal of conditions.
Some people say they didn't include affidavits from friends or family. They just included sufficient evidence showing joint assets and so on and the I-751 got approved anyway.
However some say affidavits are necessary. The I-751 instructions are worded a little oddly so it's hard to know clearly either way.

Which is it? Are affidavits just icing on the cake for extra assurance?

Yes. They are optional, and the instructions indicate that too. Each case will vary. As Swissnut indicated, affidavits are optional; however, what you want to do is send as much evidence as necessary and the general rule of thumb is to include affidavits that are substantiated by other documents. In other words, it never hurts to send more than necessary.
